Dark Waters

It may be summer, but schoolteacher Anna Silver’s trip to the coastal town of Bamfield is anything but a vacation. She’s on the run, desperate to stay one step ahead of her father’s murderer and determined to track down the one man she’s been told to trust: her father’s old cell mate, Brent Carver. But when she finds him, she discovers not a kind, elderly artist but a dangerously hot alpha male with blood on his hands. Loyal to the core, Brent would never turn away his friend’s daughter when she comes seeking help. He can’t deny Anna his protection…just as he can’t deny the instantaneous attraction he struggles to keep in check. But as their passion blazes out of control, a sadistic killer is on the hunt to stop Anna from uncovering his dark secrets.

Excerpt

Brent Carver lay in bed listening to the surf outside his open window. The rhythmic pounding pulse helped calm the ragged unsettled feeling that clawed inside him. Sometimes it even let him sleep. Not tonight.
He shifted restlessly, sweat damp on his skin. The west coast was getting a blistering-hot summer that had him thanking God he wasn’t stuck in that shithole prison, sweating it out with a few hundred of his least best friends. He sat up in bed and swiped irritably at his too long hair.
Gina had liked it long.
Damn.
He’d spent the past year trying not to think about Gina, or her murder, and yet memories snuck past his guard all the time. Her smile, her giving nature, her unwavering dedication to his undeserving ass. When he’d broken things off with her, he’d hoped she’d finally move on. Find herself a man she could marry and have babies she could spoil. But things hadn’t worked out that way, and no one regretted it more than he did.
He whipped back the covers and padded naked to the open window that faced the Pacific. It took a moment for his heartbeat to stop hammering. A moment for the burn in his chest to ease. At nearly forty years old, he’d spent half his life in prison and would never get enough of breathing in the fresh clean air of freedom.
The dark water before him stretched like a smooth satin sheet all the way to the horizon. But the calm tranquility was an illusion that disguised deceptive currents and gigantic swells, cold depths and wicked storm surges.
That ocean called to him—it always had. This sliver of coast was what he’d missed locked up in his cell for so many years. Not peace. Not serenity. Not pissing in a private bathroom. Huge rollers crashing home. Elements clashing like titans in his backyard. The abandon. The wildness. The energy. Prison had squeezed the need for that energy into a tiny corner of his mind and tortured him with it in his dreams. When he’d gotten out, he’d spent two days just staring at the ocean. This was where he belonged. This was where he needed to be. And no one was ever going to take it from him again. Being caged, being imprisoned, had almost wiped him out of existence, and the worst thing was—it was his own damn fault. He’d taken a life and gotten what he deserved.
He’d been out four years now, but the smells, the memories, the sense of watching his back, was ingrained, tattooed on his brain like most cons wore ink. He’d found his salvation in a talent for painting, enough of a talent that he could afford a kick-ass mansion anywhere in the world. But he’d returned here, to the small remote strip of land on the western edge of Vancouver Island. The scene of the crime and the only home he’d ever known.
Maybe he should buy a yacht, learn to sail. But that sort of aimless wandering didn’t appeal and his parole officer probably wouldn’t approve either. He rubbed his aching neck muscles and headed downstairs for a drink. He’d finish that last piece for the exhibition.
Exhibition.
He shook his head in disbelief. Some fancy-schmancy museum in New York was giving him an exhibition. He opened the fridge and pulled out a beer and popped the top. His agent had worked some serious magic, wrangling that mother. Only trouble was the gallery wanted the elusive and mysterious B.C. Wilkinson to turn up in person to the opening. His agent had even taken care of a passport and special visa requirements.
Yeah, right. He snorted. No fucking way. Still, Brent had learned years ago that it was easier to do what he wanted and beg forgiveness later. Not that he dealt much in forgiveness. Gina’s image smiled sweetly inside his head, but she was dead—stabbed to death by a homicidal maniac last year—and thinking about her wouldn’t bring her back.
His fist tightened around the neck of the bottle and he resisted the urge to hurl it at the wall. Prison had taught him iron control—he just hadn’t realized how much he’d need it on the outside. He headed onto his back porch, buck naked and glad of the fresh ocean breeze that cooled his overheated body. His nearest neighbor lived a quarter of a mile away, out of sight, over the bluff. This region was too remote for passersby and anyone with a boat would moor it in a sheltered cove, not at the mercy of Barkley Sound’s treacherous grasp. The moon was cloaked behind restless clouds that billowed like smoke across the sky. He was just about to sit his ass down when he saw a shadow flitter near the woods.
He had visitors?
No fucking way.
In prison he’d received enough death threats to take serious precautions with his safety. When some of the local thugs had been arrested last year, he’d let down his guard and thought the danger was over. He’d obviously thought wrong. What if it was his brother, Finn? Or the cops? He pressed his lips together. Finn knew better than to spook him and the cops had no reason to be sniffing around.
Something was going on.
No one made social calls on Brent Carver—no one without a death wish. He lived on a peninsula that, due to the rugged terrain, was only accessible by boat. There were about thirty locals living on this side of the inlet, but they were more likely to hand-feed rabid wolves than drop in for a beer.
Did his visitor know he was out here?
Leaving the bottle on the deck, he carefully slipped over the side of the porch and melted into the night. It was pitch-black in the woods, but he’d grown up here and knew every tree and hollow. He made his way along the side of the shed and ducked into the forest. Over the last year, he’d gradually stopped listening to the scanner for signs of trouble, stopped keeping firearms in the house. He’d gotten soft, but not stupid. Silently he dropped to his knees beside a massive Sitka spruce that was technically on his neighbor’s property. If she found out about his little cache, she’d be pissed. He swept dirt and dead needles off the top of a waterproof box he’d sunk into the ground, and removed his SIG Sauer. He replaced the lid and covered it as best he could in the dark. He got his bearings, and found the tree where he’d hidden his ammo. He grabbed a magazine and headed up to the road, circling around. He inched down an old trail and came up behind where the shadow had been.
Darkness cloaked the clearing where his house sat but his night vision was sharp. And damned if the woman—put a man in prison long enough and he could spot a female blindfolded at twenty paces—wasn’t climbing his porch steps shining her flashlight around the place like a laser show. Maybe she was a thief? Maybe someone had figured out Brent Carver was B.C. Wilkinson and sitting on a shedload of very expensive artwork? Then she knocked on his back door.
What the…?
He rubbed his hand over his brow. He was stark naked except for his gun, and now some woman was standing on his deck? He hoped to hell she wasn’t a Jehovah’s Witness because she was about to have a come-to-Jesus moment.
But she could still be armed and dangerous. He’d pissed off enough bad guys in the joint to be wary of anyone turning up in the middle of the night. Hell, no one visited here, period.
“Hello?” She pressed her ear to his door. “Mr. Carver?” she said louder. Her shoulders sagged when no one answered.
He didn’t recognize her voice. He moved fast and silent across the clearing, padded up the stairs just as she reached for the doorknob.
“You’re trespassing.”
She jolted, her hand going to her heart as she spun to face him. “Oh, my God. You scared me.”
Never admit fear.
“I don’t like visitors, lady.”
Her flashlight dipped and then shot back to his face, almost blinding him. She swallowed, taking in his lack of clothes and keeping her eyes north of the hot spots. “You’re naked.”
“I was in bed.” He didn’t know why he needed to explain himself.
Her voice came out like gravel. “I’m looking for Brent Carver.”
“I’m looking for peace and quiet. Looks like we’re both screwed.”
“You’re Brent?” Her free hand slipped into her bag and he grabbed her wrist and pinned her against his door before she could get the drop on him. She went ballistic and tried to whack him with the flashlight. He jerked it out of her fingers and threw it behind them. She felt tiny and delicate, crushed between him and that solid piece of oak, although her lungs were in full working order.
Shit, his ears hurt.
“No one will hear you, so you might as well stow it.” She jammed one hand against his chin, squirming like an eel, then went for gold by trying to knee him in the nuts. He deflected the attack and pressed her tighter against the door, wedging her there with his body. She barely came up to his chin but fought like a wild thing. “Want to tell me who you are and why you’re knocking on my door in the middle of the night?” He concentrated on making sure he didn’t injure her while he tried to check out what she was going for in her purse.
She scratched sharp fingernails down his arm, drew in a breath to scream even louder. Her breasts pushed against his chest, which would have worked for him in a big way if she wasn’t so goddamn terrified. Sonofa-fucking-bitch.
Why me?
He had nowhere to stick his gun so he removed the pocketbook from her fingers and stepped back, keeping a wary eye on her bloodthirsty knee. She stood there stunned, trembling, and breathing heavily. He didn’t think it had anything to do with his dazzling good looks.
“You bastard.” Her chin snapped up. “You aren’t Brent Carver.”
He cocked a brow. “What makes you say that?” He searched her bag, more by touch than sight in the darkness. A cell phone, wallet, keys, tampons, tissues. No gun or shank.
“He’s a respectable painter. He’s not some nutcase who runs about in the middle of the night, waving around a gun, among other things,” she muttered darkly. “Attacking innocent, defenseless women.”
The scratches on his arm stung enough for him to snort out a laugh at that. Her eyes narrowed. He watched moonlight flow over her features, fine boned and delicate, except for the tight clench of her jaw.
There was no obvious threat in her pocketbook, but it didn’t mean he should let his guard down. He needed clothes. For some crazy reason, he was getting a little turned on by Miss Prim and Proper telling him who and what he was. It was probably being naked and within a hundred yards of anything two legged and female, but he didn’t want to scare her any more than he had already. He wasn’t a hound. Nor was he under any illusion about what she thought might happen when he grabbed her. Someone had jumped him in the shower once and lost their eye for the trouble. Hell, most people thought he was evil incarnate and that was the way he liked it. He reached past her and opened the door. “Inside. Now.”
“I’m not going anywhere with you.” She tried to dodge aside.
He grabbed her by the shoulders and forced her across his threshold. “You want to meet Brent? I’ll take you to him.” Her eyes were so huge with fear she looked like she’d been electrocuted. But she’d come to him, she had to play by his rules.

Crystal is an enlisted mechanic with a tragic past. Grant is an officer and a pilot with a broken heart. When faced with a difficult decision, will Crystal choose wisely or lose the best thing that ever happened to her?
The love between them burns hot, but their relationship won't stay fueled if they can't beat the obstacles in their way. Besides breaking the fraternization rules, Grant and Crystal have the difference of race between them…but can they prove to the rest of the world, and to each other, that love is color blind?
Afterburn is about overcoming one's past, not judging others, learning to forgive, and what it's like to be a woman in a "man's world".

I live in Essex, not too far from London, with my very understanding husband, our identical twin boys, and two Bedlington Terriers. We're crammed into our rather cozy two-up two-down terrace and we can barely swing a cat, but hey, we love it. I work part-time as a nurse, but when I'm off duty, you will find me either chasing the toddlers around like a headless chicken, head buried in a book, or tapping away at my stories. I have always loved to read and romance is by far my favourite genre! You can easily escape into such promising worlds, where sexy Alpha males lead the way and strong heroine's often can't help but fall head over heels in love. I adore a Happy Ever After - as I'm sure we all do if we're honest, right?!  Reading and writing go hand in hand and from the day I could read, I enjoyed writing. To put pen to paper and conjure up weird and wonderful little stories was what I thrived on! English was my favourite class at school right throughout to secondary - and I will always be thankful for the teachers who gave me the opportunities to develop and be creative! If I remember rightly, one of my first stories was called 'The Turkey Who Could Talk'...but I'll tell you more about that some other day :-)

Review

****This book was part of a blog tour I was given a copy for my honest review****
Crystal Morgan's love for aircrafts is in her blood. Growing up with a pilot father she knew her future was already decided for her. Years later she finds herself an aircraft mechanic in the Air Force and swearing off pilots. The loss of her father too much to handle.
Grant Masters is a pilot with a love of flying. If only his life on the ground could be like it was in the air. His senior year of high school still plagues him, the girl he loved burned him and finding out she was only dating him to prove that she could be a daring white girl not afraid to be dating a black man. After that he swore he wouldn't date another white woman again, no matter how tempting, but he had no idea what temptation had in store for him.
A call for a hydraulic leak finds them face to face and just where fate wants them.
This book was cute, a little campy at times, but the writing ran smooth and the characters well developed. The main flaw was my typical gripe with books less than 200 pages, it felt rushed, trying to develop plot characters and drama into 88 pages, but the author did a much better job then others.

Review

****This book was part of a blog tour I was given a copy for my honest review****
"I have so many things I want to say to you, so many words to write. But how do you fit a lifetime into a letter?"
Clare is surviving..barely. Left a single mother after the tragic death of her husband to cancer, emotions are still very raw, fear and panic a constant in her life.
She has not dealt yet with the loss keeping herself busy being a good mother to their daughter. A Letter marked " When you're ready" is still unsealed and she cannot bear the thought of opening it. Logan Matthews comes on the scene as the doctor to her daughter. He is a troubled man, who has had a sad and lonely life. Clare and her daughter awaken something in him immediately, something he never knew existed, a capability to love.
"Don't let grief hold you back. Love is a risk there are no guarantees. But in the end it is always, always worth it."
This was an amazing story, I absolutely loved it. Emotional and gripping I finished it in practically one sitting and I ended it with a pile of tissues beside me. In saying that, I do not mean to say that this is a sad book. Most of the time I had a big smile on my face watching these two come together. Character, Logan is an amazing man, I loved his transformation from player to man in love. He sees something important and knows what he should do to keep it, I just loved him to bits. Clare is so strong and I understood every hesitation, every emotion. Ethan, the husband that Clare also had a POV, in this book and I admit to loving the snippet we got from him, especially the letter.
The steamy connection between these two was a big plus and the humorous conversations.
I just enjoyed the hell out of this love story and for a first novel from this author, I say well done!! Great job, wonderful writing, great flow. Cannot wait until the next book from this series.

Q&A With J.L. Berg
1. What did it feel like to have When You're Ready hit the top 100 list on Amazon?
Shortly after releasing “When You’re Ready”, I discovered, like many authors before me, that I’d become OBSESSED with Amazon. Since my debut, I’ve probably checked that website about a hundred times a day. I keep it up on my phone and just hit refresh every five seconds to check my sales rank. The minute I hit refresh and saw lists appear showing I’d made the top 100 in contemporary romance, I screamed....literally screamed. I then proceeded to jump and down in my kitchen while my husband laughed hysterically. I really never expected it. Mostly because I never allowed myself to set any goals, beyond selling one book on release day! So, everything since then has been amazing! I can’t thank my readers enough!
2. When you were writing When You're Ready was it an emotional experience for you?
Writing WYR was highly emotional for me. It’s written in first person from both the hero and the heroine's perspective. When I wrote, I felt like I was my character for a short period of time. I experienced the grief Clare had for her late husband, and the love she felt for the daughter he left behind. Thankfully, I’ve never lost a husband, but I did my best to put myself in her shoes and feel what it would be like...to have that overwhelming, consuming grief take you over in every way. Getting Clare and Logan to their HEA was a very cathartic experience for me.
  3. Will you let your daughters read this book?
You are not the first person to ask me this question, and the answer is HELL NO! Since my book is meant for a mature audience, I seriously can’t imagine my young daughters reading it, even when they are older. So, I’ve made the rational decision that they can read it when I’m dead. That way I won’t have to die of embarrassment when they get to the sex scenes and begin to wonder where I got my inspiration. :-)
4. Who are some of your favorite romance authors?
Asking a book nerd to pick her favorite authors is really hard! But I’ll try. I’m really in love with Colleen Hoover right now. A few others are SC Stephens, Samatha Towle, Jamie McGuire, Tina Reber, JR Ward, Abbi Glines, HP Mallory and Deborah Harkness. I’m also a huge Outlander fan and love Diana Gabaldon.
5. What is your favorite chocolate?
I lurve me some dark chocolate. The darker, the better. Trader Joe’s sells three-packs of dark chocolate bars, and I keep those on hand at all times. Usually only a small amount will hold me over until my next fix because it’s SOOO good. But in general, I will eat anything chocolate. If it doesn’t have chocolate in it, it’s not a dessert.
Author Info
I’m a California native, who lives in the South – Virginia to be exact.  I still prefer sushi to fried chicken, avocado to okra, and I absolutely loathe humidity, but I love watching the seasons change.  My husband and I have been here for ten years, and I still get giddy like a school girl every time it snows.
I’m married to my high school sweetheart.  We were married young, barely out of high school, when everyone told us we were crazy and stupid.  We’ll be celebrating 12 years of marriage this year, and I love him more every single day.  We’re living proof that true love knows no age limit.
We’ve been blessed with two beautiful daughters who continue to amaze and inspire me, and are probably making me go a bit insane.  I’m obsessed with yoga and pilates and am a complete chocoholic.  I apologize in advance for the amount of sweets in my book.
I’m absolutely obsessed with romance novels (duh) and probably could have built a vacation home with the amount of money I’ve invested in them over the years.  Romance novels take you to another place, making your heart race, emotions swell, passion run free.  After so many years of meeting hundreds of fictional characters and discovering their worlds, I found myself creating my own.
My debut novel, When You’re Ready, a novel about about finding love after loss, will be released August 1st!

Wanted: Wife

Wanted: Wife
2 of 5 stars false1/2
Help Wanted: A Wife
Darcy White can't believe she's answering a help wanted ad from someone looking to hire a wife, but she's hit rock bottom and is on the verge of being evicted from her apartment. When she learns that the guy she had a crush on in high school is the one looking to hire, she'd be crazy not to live out her fantasy.
Steven McDonald needs a wife, or at least a fiancée, before his grandfather retires or else he won't inherit the family business. He knows not just any woman will do, and in a desperate attempt to find a solution, he places a help wanted ad in the local paper. The day Darcy White answers it, his dreams begin to come true.
As Darcy and Steven pretend they're engaged, they make a promise to keep things platonic. But the more time they spend together, the harder it is to keep their hands off one another. With his grandfather's retirement approaching, and the possible end to their fake engagement, can Steven and Darcy admit their feelings to not only themselves but each other?
Content Warning: contains adult language and sensual love scenes.

Review

****This book was part of a blog tour I was given a copy for my honest review****
Steven McDonald finds himself placing an add in the paper for a wife. After his crazy grandfather stipulated that he needed to settle down or he will never inherit the family business when he retires.
Darcy is down on her luck, totally broke, no job and too prideful to go back to her parents to ask for help (why would she, they didn't believe in her in the first place). Scanning the job adds she sees a sign, Wanted: Wife, and the add was placed by Steven McDonald...... her high school crush.
This book started out with a familiar and comfortable story. Two people that secretly liked each other years ago, through weird circumstances being given a chance at love. I find these sorts of stories are great for a lazy afternoon where you can just slide into the book and let the story lead you away for a few hours. Wife: Wanted is short, and easy to digest. I like the business arrangement type romance, but I did feel in this one that nothing really new was added to the story. The characters were easy to read, my favourite was Steven. He was a uncommon gentlemen in the standards of todays book heroes. The story was sweet although maybe a bit to fast. I wanted a bit more detail especially into Darcy's family who seemed to have an unexpected change of heart at the end of the book, or maybe Darcy's perceptions of them just changed? Although the scenes are described as sensual they were really quite innocent and in many it read like a fade to black type scene. Still, this book was a pleasant way to pass time.

The Journey

Welcome to the fourth day of The Journey blog tour. It will run until August 9th and will feature excerpts and new author interviews each day. But first, here is the obligatory blurb about the novel to settle you into this strange world:

The Frozen Man. The Translucent Man. The Burning Man. The Wicker Man. The guide known only as the Crossroads, together these are the signposts and totems of the world that the being called the Lonely inhabits. Seeking out the meaning of his journey, the Lonely is a being consumed by philosophical inquiry and adventure. Filled with exotic places and age-old questions, the Journey is a book that seeks to merge the fantastical and real. Join the Lonely as he seeks out answers to his own existence and perhaps the meaning for us all.

A few questions for the author:

Have you been the kind of friend you want as a friend?

Absolutely. I am a friendly person who will always help out. I make time for others and I have tendency to go out of my way to make sure things go smoothly. Also, I watch a lot of Doctor Who.

Which is worse, when a good friend moves away, or losing touch with a good friend who lives right near you?

I think losing touch with a good friend who lives close because you run the risk of seeing them and having nothing to say. Or worse yet, you engage in that awkward, bland conversation that both sides know is lip service. A very sad state of affairs indeed.

What are you most grateful for?

My family and the group of close friends who I have maintained for most of my life. I am always surprised to meet new people who fit into the slowly shrinking circle of close confidants, but it is always welcome.

Here be an excerpt for your enjoyment:

IV
The Northern Chamber

The cold winds assailed the Lonely, yet he continued on despite the bitter touch of nature. As he was beginning to feel that he could travel no more, he came upon something he had not expected: the city of the North. The place known as the Northern Chamber, the house of those devoted to the ideals of the North. Upon entering this place, he felt the cold wash away and the storms stop. And as he turned back to see the trail by which he had come, he saw the veil of snow and wind through which he had ventured remained just outside of the city.

It was suspended as if frozen in time. People passed by him as if he were not there at all. Their features were pale and cold, as though they were not human at all. The city possessed no sheen, no shine, just a cold, desolate existence in which each man walked as if it were an interminable death march.

The Lonely approached the first building which harbored an open door and entered. A feeling of nothingness washed over him as the dim interior of the room absorbed him. He approached the counter. What resided behind it was a machine––a machine resembling a man. Cold, calculating eyes bore into the Lonely’s flesh from behind its chiseled, soulless features. Its movements were restricted and linear as it placed its arms on the counter and cocked its head to the Lonely.

“You are waste,” the machine called.

“What are you?” the Lonely queried, bewildered by the machine-man.

“I am perfection, the pinnacle of man.”

“You are a machine.”

“Better to be logical as a machine than random and undisciplined as an animal,” returned the machine. Cocking its head back once again, it watched the Lonely with a cold gaze.

The Lonely turned away and looked around the room. All of the patrons resembled the machines, their features identical––and all men. “Where are the women?”

“Women possess the flaw of emotion, their ways unstable and unpredictable. We have found no use for them here in the North. We care only of the perfection of oneself, the attainment of the goals of the individual.”

The Lonely shook his head, confused by the blatant, cold mentality of the machine-thing. “Life cannot be lived as thus. You must seek the middle way. A life without emotion and bonding is one lived in complete darkness. Even logic can understand that.”

“The unpredictability of emotion makes it unusable in the equation of success and profit. Emotion clouds judgment, which leads to disaster and chaos. The North does not allow such things. We thrive on consistency, usefulness.”

“I have come seeking answers. The Crossroads said that answers could be found here in the North––a piece of the puzzle for which I search.”

“The Frozen Man is the wisest among us. His logic is dizzying.”

“Where can I find this Frozen Man?”

“He is at the farthest reaches of the tundra. We were too flawed for his science.”

Interview
1.    On your fan site you have a testimonial, do you think your writing has changed in the past couple years because of what you went through and how your faith has grown?
Yes, I think so.  And I understand why.  The Gena that crawled into that sickbed isn’t the one that jumped out healthy. I’m a new person, and learning my way.  I’m learning what works for me and what doesn’t, strengths and weaknesses, and I’m having fun along the way!

2.   Which couple in your Lords of the Underworld series is your favorite and why?
I loved writing Kane and Josephina’s story.  He’s never had it easy, and because of the demon living inside of him, things have only gotten worse for him throughout the series.  Knowing the demon would hurt—and even kill—a love interest, he hasn’t allowed himself to date in centuries.  He’s had to rely on one night stands to get him by. But that isn’t going to be enough with Josephina.  He can’t get her out of his mind.  He obsessed, addicted, and determined.  Nothing will stop him from having her…except, there’s a problem that might prove bigger than the demon… (Yes, I am a tease!)

3. You live in one of the areas affected by the tornadoes in Oklahoma and from what I have seen things are slowly being repaired, for people who want to help but don't want to just send money what suggestions do you have for them?
The families that were affected by the tornados could still use your prayers as they relocate or rebuild.  There have been many church organizations bringing donations or even volunteers into the community, so you can look for that types of opportunity in your area.  Here’s a website that gives a better idea of specific needs: http://servemoore.com/.   And please know that anything you do is greatly appreciated in our community.

4. When you are having trouble writing a scene what do you?
I go for a walk or a drive, or even take a shower.  I don’t know why, but those three things work better than anything else I’ve ever tried.

5. What is your favorite comfort food?
My motto: Will Write For Food.  LOL  If I had to pick one, I’d go with…bread pudding (no raisins)
