Excerpt

“We’ve brought the healer.”
“Jocelyn,” said Jameson. “Her name is Jocelyn.”
“Thank you for coming,” said one of the men, sitting legs apart on a crate facing the man who was ill. It looked like he’d been there a while.
“How long has he been sick?” I asked, already squatting at the man’s side.
“A day,” said Alexander, the man Isadora stood beside. His voice was gruff, and with his massive body, he reminded me of a titan.
“His name is Aurelius?” I asked, placing my hand on the man’s arm.
I was surprised when one of the men confirmed it, not believing I had the attentiveness still in me. This was a good sign. It meant there was still energy left to heal the man.
“Aurelius,” I whispered into his ear. “You’re going to feel a jolt.” I had learned several attempts back that giving them fair warning calmed us both.
Jameson, who had been at my side since we’d entered, was preparing to drop to his knees where he would help channel his energy. But he never got the chance.
Aurelius began thrashing.
His limbs flailed, his eyes rolled back, his body arched, writhing maniacally.
Suddenly, bodies were surrounding us, holding Aurelius down, taking the strength of every one of the men to do it. I did my best to help, settling my hands on him and pressing the weight of my body down. Still, his arms swung in all directions, his fingers clawing against the pain.
Gradually, over the period of several seconds, the violent shudder seized and, finally, Aurelius went limp.
I took in a breath and let it out with a relieved laugh.
That was when I noticed no one else was reacting. Only me because I hadn’t seen it yet.
Every eye was now on my wrist, the one where I wore my mother’s bracelet. The red cloth I’d used to hide it was gone, clutched between Aurelius’s fingers.
During his thrashing, he’d revealed what we’d kept so well hidden from every other prisoner in the village.
“You’ve allowed a Weatherford here?” Alexander’s voice boomed inside the narrow walls, shaking the wooden structure with its force. His eyes were wide, incensed, as they moved between Isadora and Jameson.
Looking around, I saw the irate faces of ten strangers and I knew what was coming.
Jameson saw it before me and was prepared when the fists began to fly.
Ducking and finding cover would have been a wise choice but logic was Jameson’s trait, which I was sure he used to deduce that winning a brawl with ten stout men was going to leave him bloodied. This dawned on me too, even as I saw Jameson deftly maneuver around flying fists to take down three of the men. By the time I was able to conjure the last of my energy inside me, a fourth had collapsed in a pile on the floor. Then, just as the rest surrounded him, their feet left the ground.
Their arms and legs swung with precision but found nothing to land on as I levitated them a foot above the ground. Jameson, stunned, stepped back, his fists falling to his sides.
I still had my hands on Aurelius but could feel the energy in me slipping away.
I was running out of time.
Summoning the last of my energy, splitting it between keeping the men in the air and healing Aurelius, I opened my mouth and released a scream that rattled my eardrums.
Then I was falling back, my body crumpling like a rag doll against the hard wooden floor.
The sharp screech of my family stone as it slammed down and dragged along the planks…Aurelius’s eyes fluttering open…Jameson’s determined expression hovering above me…The blurred outline of the men as they advanced behind him.
These were the last things I saw before I disappeared into exhaustion.

Interview

  1. I love how your shifter characters have their animals traits in there human form and you have such a range of different animal shifters and cross breeds, I love visualizing them in my head. Do you have any special combo's up your sleeve? Any new shifter animal we should look out for?I’m sure I do, but I’m a pantser with my writing and, unfortunately, I have no idea what I’m going to do with what characters (or what characters I’ll create) until I start working on a book.
  2. You also write a dragon series under the name G A Aiken. Do you have a favorite series which you prefer to write?I really love my dragons because I’ve been a sword-and-sorcery geek since I was a kid. And it’s really hard to include Medieval-like battle scenes in the middle of Manhattan.
  3. You write the oddest, kookiest, most hilarious characters (my favorites are Bo and Blair). Are these based on people you know in real life? If not, where do these come from?I can’t say I know people like this because I don’t really leave my house to meet new people. But the few friends I have, do give me ideas. The heroine for my latest book, Toni Jean-Louis Parker is loosely based on one of my best friends who is the matriarch of her family and manages to help everyone else around her. Just watching my friend the last few years, really helped when I began working on WOLF WITH BENEFITS.
  4. A lot/ most books in the paranormal romance are very heavy and over loaded with tortured souls and drama. Although you write in the same genre your books are uplifting and fun while still being emotional. They have the same supernatural themes and also drama, but you handle them differently. Did you go out of your way to write this way, to go against the norm or is there just no other way that you would do it?When I wrote the first draft to PACK CHALLENGE, it was much darker. And when I re-read it, I thought… “I really need to lighten this up.” Not for anyone in particular but simply for myself. I like combining light and dark, finding a way to balance those two things. It’s not always easy and there’s always a risk over going too far one way or the other, but it’s a challenge I enjoy. Add in some blood and guts with the humor and drama and I’m a happy girl.
  5. Are you yourself an avid fan of ice hockey and/or roller derby? Both these shifter league sports just add a whole new dimension to your books, I particularly enjoy the books with them in them.I’m from Long Island, so I think I’m legally required to be an ice hockey fan. And my matriarch friend was the one who suggested roller derby. “You’ve gotta check it out. It’s so cool!” I thought she was talking about roller derby from the 70s, which I enjoyed watching with my mom, but it was always so fake. But we went to a bout with the LA Derby Dolls several years ago and I was IN LOVE! I’ve been a huge fan ever since. Plus, it’s much easier to write about a sport that you actually enjoy watching. I find skating very soothing. Not actually doing it (I don’t know how to ice or roller skate), but watching it. And listening to skates against ice or a banked track makes me feel very zen.
  6. Your bio says that you are originally from Long Island, New York and you now live on the West Coast, did it take you awhile to get used to the people here?Getting used to the people wasn’t that hard. Getting used to the lack of good pizza, Chinese food, Italian and Jewish bakeries, and White Castles HAS BEEN DEVASTING!!! I order beef and mushrooms from a Chinese restaurant in Los Angeles and they add all this extra crap in it. Bamboo shoots and tiny ears of corn…what the hell is that? When I order beef and mushrooms that and some sauce is all I expect to get! So that’s been the hardest part of getting used to this town. Well…that and the loss of seasons. I miss my autumn leaves falling.
  7. What is your favorite comfort food?
Chinese food. When I was growing up, my family had Chinese food at least two times a week and the night before big holidays like Christmas or Thanksgiving.
  8. Has being an author changed your life?Absolutely. I started writing after my divorce and just the process of writing helped me through a really tough time. Then when I sold my first book and things began to take off, it really helped boost my confidence in everything else I did. Now it allows me to work from home, which is beyond wonderful. I’m not really a people-person, so office work was like pure torture for me. I met some great people that I’m still friends with until this day, but some people made me plot their demise on a nearly daily basis. That was not a good way for me to spend my days. It wasn’t healthy. I won’t say I’m much healthier now, but I focus on the demise of characters I dislike rather than people sitting in the cube next to me making clicking sounds with their teeth. Because that’s seriously irritating!

One of the hottest new voices in paranormal romance, Shelly Laurenston knows how to do it all, delivering tales that are wickedly funny, action-packed, and scorch-your-fingers sexy. With The Mane Event, she proves just how delicious love can be once you unleash your inner beast... Christmas Pride How come all the good-looking ones are insane? That's what runs through NYPD cop Desiree "Dez" MacDermot's mind the minute she hooks up again with her childhood buddy, Mace Llewellyn. It isn't just the way he stares at her with those too-sexy gold eyes―as if he could devour her on the spot. Or the six-four, built-like-a-Navy Seal bod-o-death. It isn't even that he sniffs her neck and purrs, making her entire body tingle. It's more about that disconcerting, shifting-from-man-to-lion thing that unhinges her...and makes her want more. Mace likes making Dez crazy. In fact, he likes her any way he can get her―in bed, on the desk, here, now, again. Together, they'd always been trouble, but Dez has no idea just how good trouble can feel... Shaw's Tail Brendon Shaw, hotel owner and lion shifter, has seen better days. He's been beaten, had a gun to the back of his head, and had to be rescued by a Pack of shape-shifting wolves. He didn't think he'd survive the night, much less find the woman of his dreams. And he never thought the woman of his dreams would have a Tennessee accent and wear cowboy boots. Once he sets his sights on her, the predator in him is ready to pounce and never let go. Ronnie Lee Reed is ready to change her life, and New York City is the place where any girl―even one who runs with a Pack―can redefine herself. First order of business: find a mate, settle down, and stop using men for sex. Even big, gorgeous, lion-shifting, oh-my-what-big-um-paws-you-have men. Then again...

Some things are so worth waiting for. Like the moment when Jessica Ward "accidentally" bumps into Bobby Ray Smith and shows him just how far she's come since high school. Back then, Jess's gangly limbs and bruised heart turn to jelly any time Smitty's "all the better to ravish you with" body came near her. So, some things haven't changed. Except now Jess is a success on her own terms. And she can enjoy a romp-or twenty-with a big, bad wolf and walk away. Easy. The sexy, polished CEO who hires Smitty's security firm might be a million miles from the loveable geek he knew, but her kiss, her touch, is every bit as hot as he imagined. Jess was never the kind to ask for help, and she doesn't want it now, not even with someone targeting her Pack. But Smitty's not going to turn tail and run. Not before proving that their sheet-scorching animal lust is only the start of something even wilder.

In "The Mane Event" and "The Beast in Him," Laurenston has introduced a whole new breed of heroes--sexy, shape-shifting hunks who redefine the term Alpha male. In "The Mane Attraction," the king of the beasts finds himself unexpectedly being tamed by the right woman.

Growing up on the tough Philly streets, Gwen O'Neill has learned how to fend for herself. But what is she supposed to do with a nice, suburban Jersey boy in the form of a massive Grizzly shifter? Especially one with a rather unhealthy fetish for honey, moose, and…uh…well, her. Yet despite his menacing ursine growl and four-inch claws, Gwen finds Lachlan "Lock" MacRyrie cute and really sweet. He actually watches out for her, protects her, and unlike the rest of her out-of-control family manages not to morbidly embarrass her. Too bad cats don't believe in forever. At nearly seven feet tall, Lock is used to people responding to him in two ways: screaming and running away. Gwen-half lioness, half tigress, all kick-ass-does neither. She's sexy beyond belief and smart as hell, but she's a born protector. Watching out for the family and friends closest to her but missing the fact that she's being stalked by a murderous enemy who doesn't like hybrids…and absolutely hates Gwen. Lock probably shouldn't get involved, but he will. Why? Because this is Gwen-and no matter what the hissing, roaring, drape destroying feline says about not being ready to settle down, Lock knows he can't simply walk away. Not when she's come to mean absolutely everything to him.

Even if he has to drag her off to an isolated Maine town where the only neighbors are other bears almost as crazy as he is... Let sleeping dogs lie. Bo knows it's good advice, but he can't leave Blayne be. Blame it on her sweet sexiness -- or his hunch that there's more to this little wolfdog than meets the eye. Blayne has depths he hasn't yet begun to fathom -- much as he'd like to. She may insist Bo's nothing but a pain in her delectable behind, but polar bears have patience in spades. Soon she'll realize how good they can be together. And when she does, animal instinct tells him it'll be worth the wait...

Ric can't believe his luck. He's wanted this fiercely-independent she-wolf from day one, but he never expected teamwork as explosive as this. And now is his last chance to show Dee what she needs isn't some in-your-face Alpha male-but a wily, resourceful wolf who'll always have her back in a fight…and between the sheets.

Especially when that someone is a curvy she-tiger with a skill set that's turning Crush's lone-bear world upside down--and bringing his passion out of hibernation. . . As a member of an elite feline protection unit, Marcella Malone has no problem body-dropping anyone who hunts her kind. But Crush is proving one major pain in her gorgeous tail. The only reason she's joined forces with him is to track down the wealthy human who's got her entire species in his ruthless sights. Book By G.A. Aiken

For Nolwenn witch Talaith, a bad day begins with being dragged from bed by an angry mob intent on her crispy end and culminates in rescue by-wait for it-a silver-maned dragon. Existence as a hated outcast is nothing new for a woman with such powerful secrets. The dragon, though? A tad unusual. This one has a human form to die for, and knows it. According to dragon law, Talaith is now his property, for pleasure...or otherwise. But if Lord Arrogance thinks she's the kind of damsel to acquiesce without a word, he's in for a surprise... Is the woman never silent? Briec the Mighty knew the moment he laid eyes on Talaith that she would be his, but he'd counted on tongue-lashings of an altogether different sort. It's embarrassing, really, that it isn't this outspoken female's magicks that have the realm's greatest dragon in her thrall. No, Briec has been spellbound by something altogether different-and if he doesn't tread carefully, what he doesn't know about human women could well be the undoing of his entire race..

Only for those I love would I traipse into the merciless Northlands to risk life, limb, and my exquisite beauty. But do they appreciate it? Do they say, 'Gwenvael the Handsome, you are the best among us - the most loved of all dragons?' No! For centuries my family has refused to acknowledge my magnificence as well as my innate humility. Yet for them, and because I am so chivalrous, I will brave the worst this land has to offer. So here I stand, waiting to broker an alliance with the one the Northlanders call The Beast. A being so fearful, the greatest warriors will only whisper its name. Yet I, Gwenvael, will courageously face down this terrifying...woman? It turns out the Beast, a.k.a. Dagmar Reinholdt, is a woman - one with steel-gray eyes and a shocking disregard for my good looks. Beneath her plain robes and prim spectacles lies a sensual creature waiting to be unleashed.   I know what they see when they look at me. The charming, soft-spoken dragoness bred from the most powerful of royal bloodlines. A disguise strong than any battle shield that allows me to keep all suitors at tail's length. A technique that's worked until him. Until Ragnar the Cunning, handsome barbarian warlord and warrior mage from the desolate Northlands. Unlike those who've come before him, he does not simply submit to my astounding charm and devastating smile. Instead he dismisses me as vapid, useless and, to my great annoyance, rather stupid. Yet I'll allow no male to dismiss me. Soon he'll learn my worth, my many skills, and the strength of my will. For this one challenges me enough to make me want to ruthlessly taunt him, tease him and, finally, when the trap is set, bring him to his knees.

Aiken's fifth book in her "New York Times"-bestselling Dragon Kin series is a wicked and witty tale of one fearless and outspoken heroine teamed up with an incorrigible barbarian.... I was raised for battle. And as the first daughter of a warrior family, I've earned my reputation the hard way. Yet now I fight alongside uncivilized male Northland dragons who think a female is only good for breeding and waiting back home in the cave. But it's the foolish and foolhardy who would try to stop me, Rhona the Fearless, from doing what I do best - destroying the enemies of my kind. So the smartest thing wily barbarian Vigholf the Abhorrent can do for me is stay out of my way as we risk all on a deadly mission in enemy territory. I don't care if he's fascinated by me, even though he is as attractive as he is resourceful. He's having far too much fun putting me in difficult situations and testing my sense of duty to the limit. And I'm going to enjoy challenging his insufferable confidence, outwitting his schemes, and making him surrender in the wildest ways

Some things never go away, like vile enemies, bad ale, and annoying kin. Honestly, though, I thought I was finished with the one dragon I'd have done anything for: Éibhear the Blue, a big, gorgeous, blue-haired beast who thinks the world belongs to him. The world and, apparently, me. If Éibhear wants to play the caring hero and travel into the most forsaken of Gods forsaken lands to protect the one woman who doesn't need it -- namely me -- I'll let him. Because while I'm trying to fulfill a ridiculous quest for a pushy god, I'm going to draw this overconfident warlord much too close, rekindle his fires, and enjoy every minute of his delicious defeat..

Inappropriate Thoughts (Victoria Wilde #1)18+

The following review is for 18+ readers.

Inappropriate Thoughts
2 of 5 stars false
The first in a new erotic contemporary romance series, Inappropriate Thoughts is a scorching mix of desire, sex, love and slightly inappropriate comedy.
Victoria Wilde's best friend, Jillian, is a disillusioned divorcée and best-selling romance novelist who can't write a chapter without her hunky male heartthrob suffering ED, an STD, or even worse. Brian Nash is a tennis-obsessed, college senior who's unlucky in love and the roommate and best friend of Jillian's son, Rob. After Brian learns he's being manipulated by a college love, Rob offers him a spring break escape to his home in Miami. There Brian meets the surprisingly young and also tennis passionate Jillian, and their shared interest quickly develops into an intense mutual attraction. As they struggle to fight their feelings, they develop a unique super intimate, yet non-physical connection that provides Jillian with the inspiration to write again while erasing Brian's brokenhearted funk. Will the lonely pair continue with this distinctive relationship, actually explore their passion or will they discover all of it is a really bad idea?

READER ADVISORY:
This story contains content some readers may find objectionable, including voyeurism, anal play, multiple partners and explicit language.

Review

****This book was part of a blog tour, I received a copy for my honest review****
Jillian is a highly successful romance novelist who is suffering from a weird sort of writers block, since finding her husband servicing another woman in their pool. She has a college aged son, Rob, who is friends with Brian Nash.
Brian is in an unsuccessful relationship, but finds he is stuck on this girl and can't get her out of his mind. Rob persuades him to come home with him over the spring break holidays, the big drawing card, Rob's mom's house has a tennis court and Brian is a lover of the game.
Jillian has had a string of unsuccessful blind dates since her divorce so when her son and his hot friend come home for the break she finds herself, inappropriately drawn to Brian. Brian is equally drawn to his friends surprisingly young, tennis mad mother.
Wild fantasies and inappropriate thoughts from both parties slowly wear down this pairs resistance to each other and they both start to wonder whether maybe a fling wouldn't be so bad.
I had high expectations for this book. The idea of a woman coming out of her divorce and exploring her sexuality with a younger guy really sounded appealing, and it was, to a point.
What got in the way of my enjoyment of this book was the Jillian's best friend Victoria, she was like Samantha from Sex in the City on steroids. And we got too many parts of the book from her perspective for me to enjoy it. I understand from the title that this will be a series based around this character, however for me, the book was sold on Jillian and Brian being the main couple, Victoria and her wild cougar antic's just got in the way of me developing any real feelings or interest in them. I understand that her and Jillian's conversations were probably supposed to be humorous, and a few were, but after a while I just found it annoying. I started skimming and I hate skim reading. There really was just too much going on, too many storylines. The focus for me just wasn't where I wanted it to be.
The pacing of the book was also a little off for me. The first half of the book was really slow and I found it really hard to get into. I hate giving a bad review, especially to a book that I thought I would enjoy, but this book was just not for me.
