Twisted Dreams

Twisted Dreams (The Dhampyre Chronicles, #1)
1/2
Born of a vampire father to a human mother, Elizabeth Bandores’ life was never going to be normal, so she can’t image why she thinks starting college will be any different.
Having grown up in the affluent Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles and desperate to escape, she decides on the small college town of Sage Springs. With dreams of being a writer, she joins the college newspaper and is introduced to blond, confident Flynn Matthews, Sage Springs’ rising swim star.
But a carnival has set up in the small town, and the boy running the Waltzer catches her eye. Dark-haired, leather-jacketed Riley is rude, with an air of danger. Elizabeth can’t help but notice him. And when an accident thrusts them together, she discovers he’s noticed her, too.
Sage Springs isn’t the quiet little town Elizabeth had hoped for. The forests bordering the town harbour a dark secret—one some of the residents have been trying to protect, and the leaders of the carnival have set in their sights...

Review
****Warwick House Press, via NetGalley, provided me with a complimentary advanced review copy of this for my honest review****
Elizabeth Bandores struggles like most girls her age. Only, she doesn't struggle with just the average growing pains. She's a Dhampyre, part vampire, part human. Oh, and she also has the ability of her touch bringing her glimpses into a person's life. Past, present, or future. Growing up could be tough, especially having to explain her father's "sun allergy" and avoiding physical contact when possible, but she has loving parents who supported her. Wanting to go away to school and try her hand at being "normal" takes some convincing but she does it. She is officially a student in a sleepy town called Sage Springs. When a freak accident and a carnival welcome her into her new town, she's wondering if it's just her luck or an omen of what's to come. Add a mysterious and attractive carnie named Riley, who seems to always be around when things go wrong, and Elizabeth is about the go on the journey of her life.
Even though this isn't the genre I really read much of anymore, I still really enjoyed this story. It felt slightly more YA than New Adult, even though the characters were NA age. Not to say the characters were excessively immature, just the opposite, they read like their age but in a positive way. It just had that feel. Besides her gift and parentage, Elizabeth is a normal girl trying to find her place in the world, it made her easy to bond with and follow her story. The levels and secrets of the story were a little predictable if you looked hard enough but intriguing. There seemed to be a supporting character for everyone. Ones to love and loath, ones you cheered when they met their demise, a few you forgot about, and others you hope pop up in future writing. Riley followed the bad boy with a chained up soft spot story to a t, ultimately just doing what he knew and coming through as the book went on. The coven and magic was detailed and brought more action to the writing. Overall, a fun rainy night read.

****Entangled Publishing, LLC, via NetGalley provided me with a copy of this book for my honest review *
This is the second book in the Chronicles of a Reluctant Necromancer series. In this follow up, we pick up as Cecilia and Ward are running for their lives. Ward's finally beginning to understand he's not the under talented necromancer he once viewed himself as. They find themselves emerged further and further into a world of power hunger, dark magic, and a new slue of characters that bring a whole new set of issues and challenged with them.
I did read book 2 and this was a great addition to the series. This series isn't about the romance even though there is tension, you find yourself begging the characters just to get it over with, but that's not the theme of this series. The theme of this series is the adventure, the mystery, and the magic. The pace was fast and kept you completely entranced in the storyline. We meet new enemies and a new world as our characters fight for survival. Let's hope we don't have to wait another 2 years for the third!

New author on my radar! This book was such an intense thrill ride. In a time where post-apocalyptic novels are abundant this book still brought a fresh spin that held my attention from the beginning. April's journey is a violent and bloody one as she discovers the tattered remains of her world aren't what she thought they were. I really respected April. She's young, 17, and instead of allowing herself to become a victim she adapts to survive the best she can, teaching herself how to fight and arming herself. She doesn't get cocky and go out guns blazing though, she remains smart. Even after her family is taken she devises a plan. It was nice to see a young characters not be displayed as some ditzy hormone filled body. There were twists and turns I didn't see coming and the story was well written and fast paced. The world was so intricately developed and realistic that you got sucked into an alternate universe where this was the real world. I definitely recommend this one and it was free on Smashwords at the time I posted this review.

A lonely walk on the beach on the night of her 17th birthday turns into a nightmare when Sofia is kidnapped by a vampire. Taken back to the Shade, a forest on an island that has been be spelled to be in darkness always, she is there for a special purpose. To be a gift to the Prince Derek Novak when he awakens from his 400 year slumber.
Derek is immediately drawn to her , unfortunately she also has caught the obsessive attention of Derek's brother Lucas.
Already in a dangerous position of having to trying and please Derek to keep her life, now she has a psycho vampire who wants her for himself. How will she keep her life and her growing feelings for Derek under wraps?
This was a very quick book, only 81 pages, however when I read the blurb I felt it held a lot of promise. Definitely some cool ideas and I am always after something different in the paranormal romance genre. To me it definitely would have been better if it had been given more length and a bit more info into backgrounds etc. Things were alluded to that we didn't get the full picture of and it was the interesting stuff. The war with the hunters, what Derek's Dad is up too, the prophecy or the chains that have been set in motion because of Sofia and Derek.
Also for me, I kept on wishing for more passion between the couple. It was a lot of internal thoughts from the different POV, instead of actual conversations or actions. I craved these actions and felt the lack of them.
In saying all that, that ending has left me with a hankering for what happens next. What is going to happen with Lucas? I need to know!! It was a solid 3 star read for me and I will be getting the following book.

Existence

Existence (Existence Trilogy, #1)
4 of 5 stars false
What happens when you're stalked by Death? You fall in love with him, of course.
Pagan Moore doesn't cheat Death, but instead, falls in love with him.
Seventeen year old Pagan Moore has seen souls her entire life. Once she realized the strangers she often saw walking through walls were not visible to anyone else, she started ignoring them. If she didn't let them know she could see them, then they left her alone. Until she stepped out of her car the first day of school and saw an incredibly sexy guy lounging on a picnic table, watching her with an amused smirk on his face. Problem is, she knows he's dead.
Not only does he not go away when she ignores him, but he does something none of the others have ever done. He speaks. Pagan is fascinated by the soul. What she doesn't realize is that her appointed time to die is drawing near and the wickedly beautiful soul she is falling in love with is not a soul at all.
He is Death and he's about to break all the rules.

Review

Pagan has seen spirits her whole life, and has learned the benefits of just leaving. She has gotten so used to their presence, floating in and out of her life that when one starts following her and then starts speaking to her, she is needless to say , a little freaked out.
Then she gets into a car accident and things start to get scary, she survives but she doesn't know how. All she knows is another soul starts following her around talking , looking at her strangely, a boy at school who would never look at her before is acting very, very interested and the soul that she has been seeing and talking to her has shown up at school as a very real person. Pagan thinks she is going crazy, however she is very drawn to Dank and now he seems to be protecting her from things she doesn't understand and acting very possessive of her. What does he want and why won't he tell her who or what he is?
I am a fan of paranormal romance, but I have never read a book where Death was the love interest, so I was very intrigued when I read the blurb for this story.
Pagan, was an interesting character and her ability to see spirits gave her that extra little something, something, instead of just being the plain human girl that a supernatural creature becomes enamoured by. Dank, well I just loved him and of course wanted him to get what he wanted, which was Pagan. There were quite a few unexpected things happening in this book, Leif, Pagans boyfriend, especially was an odd ball that I was deeply curious about. Something just seemed..off about his character and then the last line of the book gave me a sort of answer. It also left me thinking, very well played Miss Glines, you left me satisfied because, no there isn't a cliffhanger, per say. But there is a very big, fat, tease at the end of this book that has made reading the next book an absolute necessity.
It was great to see an immortal being in trouble and how even the powerful have to answer for breaking the rules of the universe.
This was a great Young Adult story, with a original paranormal plot. I am very interested into seeing where this series will go and I will definitely be reading the next one.

The Witch Avenue Series

Lonely Souls (The Witch Avenue, #1)
 4 of 5 stars false
It's two weeks before Triss turns 18, and her world is about to change into the most magical one imaginable as she readies herself to enter The Witch Avenue Order... that is until her mother's disappearance. Instead of celebrating her transformation, she finds herself spreading rose petals into her mother's empty grave.
When Logan, her best friend from junior high, moves back to town for college, he vows to help her find the answers she so desperately seeks surrounding her mother's disappearance. As they begin uncovering clues, it becomes apparent that the life of white magic they both grew up loving is not what the majority practices, and their lives are in danger.
With a haunting feeling that her mother may still be alive, she begins to hear a call to the wilderness. Triss realizes that in order to find the answers she needs, she must learn the ways of her ancestors and become the hunter, not the hunted before it's too late, and she becomes part of the lonely souls.

****This book was part of a blog tour, I received a copy for my honest review****
Triss is only a few weeks away from her 18th birthday, her mother has disappeared and she refuses to believe that her mother is dead. Her coven is not happy with her, bad things keep showing up and her friendship with Logan starts turning into something more. I liked Triss she was smart, sweet and mature beyond her years. Logan was the perfect balance to Triss; he calms her and knows just what to say. This book was a great start to the series; I did not feel bombarded with information which can sometimes happen with the first book in the series. I liked the innocence of the relationship between Logan and Triss, their feelings were not based on looks, but on a deeper connection between the two. I did want to see more of the storyline; the book seemed to focus more on the romance than the story. This was a really good young adult paranormal book, it's not too heavy and there is a solid foundation for the rest of the series. I want to see where Karice is going to go with it, I like her writing style and I can't wait to read the next book.

  3 of 5 stars false
I’m dying, I thought. This was unexpected and not at all how I envisioned my death. I was supposed to die gardening in a flowerbed as a hundred-year-old woman, not as a seventeen-year-old trapped in a lake beneath inches of ice.
Llona Reese is used to living on the run. After the Vykens killed her parents, she knew they would eventually come for her too. She can’t take any chances. But when she starts to make friends for the first time in her life, she gets careless and lets her guard down. Big mistake.
As an Aura, Llona can manipulate light and harness its energy. But if she wants to survive, Llona will have to defy the Auran Council and learn to use her power as a weapon against the Vyken whose sole desire is to take her light. Now she’s caught in something even bigger than she can understand, with a power she can’t wield, and no one she can trust, except, just maybe, a mysterious stranger.
In this breathtaking and romantic adventure, Rachel McClellan delivers a truly mesmerizing story that will keep you guessing to the very end.

Review

****This book was part of a blog tour, I received a copy for my honest review****

This book started out with an abnormal girl, who doesn't like to be noticed and doesn't really know anything about her gift. Then we have a guy who knows all about her, he is protective and tells her they can only be friends. There are these bad guys Vykens who kills Auras, Llona has to learn how to use her powers and fight to protect herself. Christian helps her while trying to not to get emotionally involved with her. The beginning of this book started out like so many other young adult paranormal books that I have seen recently, there were a few things that set it apart. The characters were well developed, easy to relate to and had certain little quirks that set them apart from other typical young adult characters. I was interested in the story and while it wasn't something I couldn't put down, it was still a engaging. The writing itself was good, the author created a great world within a world. I would have rated this higher, but I have read another series with a similar plot line. Overall this book was your typical young adult novel; it had great characters, an angsty love story and a conflict. I am going to read the next book in this series, a lot of the time the second book is a lot better than the first.

Llona will do whatever it takes to protect her new found friends and home, but the dark plot that is threatening Lucent Academy, a school that’s supposed to be a safe place for Auras, may be too powerful for even Llona to defeat. This fast-paced tale of love, loyalty, and overcoming the darkness will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page!

Fallen Ruler

Excerpt
The older, gray-skinned being Lya had seen in her dream now helped her off the soft bed. She was still disoriented. Her head felt detached from her body, like she had been on a rollercoaster for hours. She stared open-mouthed at the weird looking bald being, while she allowed herself to be led. Lya had a vague memory of being lifted from the green gel by him and the younger being. The younger one wasn’t around now. Lya’s feet touched the ground. She wasn’t dreaming. Oh, this was bad.
Her pain had subsided somewhat. Lya looked around the room. It reminded her of those sci-fi movies: clean and modern, with lots of glass. Aside from the narrow, high bed, the only other item in the room was a ten-inch panel, with rows of light running the length of the far wall.
She turned back to study the gray being’s face. He was ugly. He had no hair. The thick membrane around his eyes looked like fake eyelashes. Odd, pulsating veins covered his body.
“Who are you?” Lya’s voice sounded like a rasp. With every word she spoke her head throbbed. “Where am I?”
“In Ray.”
Lya frowned. “Is it near Delhi?”
“A few light years away. It’s a planet, in a parallel universe.”
His words acted like an electrical discharge, jolting Lya awake. She was hallucinating. She knew she was. There was no other explanation. She reached out and touched the gray being. She felt him. Okay, hallucination was real. Her mind was distorting her vision. That sounded plausible. Don’t freak out. Lya smiled. “Is it close to those Streams?”
“It’s beyond that.”
The smile faded from Lya’s lips. “You’re screwing with me, right?”
“Don’t you worry, everything will be fine.”
Lya continued to stare at the gray… man—she guessed he was a man—as his words echoed in her brain. They triggered an image. She saw this same being placing her into that green tank, saying those very same words. Or not her... Lya. Although it felt like her, and somehow she knew it was her, but it was really the albino. The albino didn’t want to leave. She hesitated, grabbing onto the tank’s edges, and asked what it would be like? Would she ever come back? She turned to the older gray being and said, “Natuc, will you bring me back?”
“Natuc?” Lya whispered.
The gray being smiled. “You remembered. Good. Keep alert for those sudden burst of images, that’s how you will get your memory back.”
“My memory?” Lya searched Natuc’s face. “Please tell me this is all a mistake. A punishment for…” Lya couldn’t think of something she should be punished for, she hadn’t done anything all that bad to deserve being locked up in… what was this place?
“Calm down. You’re not hallucinating, Tsaen.”
“Who?”
“Tsaen.”
“Tsaen? The albino, Tsaen? I’m not Tsaen.” Lya bit down on her lower lip. “I’m not Tsaen….”
 Fallen Ruler

For sixteen years, Lya, has lived as a normal human, until her father, Walter, gets involved with the wrong people and puts Lya's life at risk. During a visit to Miami, Lya's older sister is kidnapped, and Lya and her father are subsequently taken hostage by Walter's associates and forced to board a plane to India. When the plane lands in Delhi, Lya is rescued by three monks and taken to a Monastery. There her reality is shattered, when she learns the true identity of her rescuers and, even more surprisingly, herself. Lya is now faced with the toughest decision of her life. Can she live up to her ethereal destiny and save her people and her family?

 Review

****This book was part of a blog tour, I was provided with a copy for my honest review****

Lya has always thought she was a normal girl, when her dad makes some bad decisions and she ends up in India being rescued by Monks her life changes forever. This book was a pleasant surprise, I don't really read alien books because I have not enjoyed the majority of them, but this book has changed my mind. The main character Lya came off as easy to relate to with a quiet inner strength. The plot line was unique and well thought out. I have to praise Eleanor for the writing, there were so many different aspects to this story, yet it wasn't disjointed. The story flowed together effortlessly; there was lightness and humor in certain spots that balanced out the dark seriousness. I really enjoyed Fallen Ruler and I would recommend it to people who enjoy young adult fantasy books.

Review

****This book was part of a blog tour, I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. ****

Sometimes I really need a good magic book. Something that makes you suspend all logical and realistic thoughts and just read and enjoy with a childlike fascination.
Magic, witches and wizards, oh my!!
"He shot into the air on wings of magic"
Seriously, I had a little jolt of pleasure that ran through my system when I read that line. It was the first magic I had seen in the book and I thought to myself, this is going to be good.
This is going to be something different.
And it was.
Layla, our heroine, has had a difficult time, her mother and only family passes away, leaving her alone.
Through a letter her mother wrote,Layla gets told a crazy story of love, desperation and protection. She finds out that she is not alone and goes searching for the family that gave her up.
All is not as she thought.
What she finds is herself, as in her real self, a handsome protector, an evil enemy after her power and the beautiful and tragic love story of her parents.
The magic in this book was my favorite, the witches and wizards, good and bad, their coven lifestyles, their powers and general day to day existence, I could have had a book about that and been happy.  The bonding and family structures were fascinating and I hope to read more of them in the next book.
The blossoming relationship between Quinlan and Layla, him teaching her about her life, how gentle and sweet he was with her was really lovely . Although it sort of was overshadowed in the end by the tragic but beautiful relationship of her parents, this part of the book was heart wrenching, I definitely shed a tear or two.
Do I sense that history may be about to repeat itself?
My only complaint would be that we got all this information and everything seemed to be at a peak, with the bad guys on the hunt again.... and then it was over and we were left with a cliff hanger ending.
Besides that, Descension was well written, I wasn't bogged down with too much information and it has laid an excellent foundation for what is sure to be a great follow up book/books. I am intrigued and definitely want to know what happens next. I have my own theories, but I guess I will just have to wait and see.... :)

Dark Promise

 3 of 5 stars false
Rylie has it all - great friends, dream boy, loving family. But on the eve of her sixteenth birthday, her perfect little world shatters. A stranger claiming to be her real mother appears with a secret: Rylie is a faery whose powers will be unleashed on her birthday. Captured and forced into a new life, Rylie struggles to keep everything she loves and discovers a terrifying truth: some promises cannot be broken.

Review

**** I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.****

Rylie is a normal fifteen year old girl, a few days before her sixteenth birthday she begins to have really bad headaches. The night before her birthday a woman comes to her house and Rylie finds out that she is a fairy and that the dark faeries want her for the incredible power she will have one she finishes her transformation. Rylie gets kidnapped and taken to the dark fairy land; she is told she must marry Kallan. Rylie loves her boyfriends Adam but she starts to have feelings about Kallan, Rylie has to figure out who she really wants. I liked this book a lot, Rylie is a really good main female character. She makes the best of her situation, without completely accepting it; she still tries to find different ways to get home. Adam was a sweet normal boy, everything a mom wants in her daughters’ boyfriend. Kallan was a bit darker, he seemed like a jerk at first, but once you got to know him he was a really great person. The writing was good and the suspense kept me interested. This book had a lot going for it; I would have given it five stars, except two things really bugged me. One I am pretty burned out on the love triangle, I have read to many books with a love triangle, now every time I read a book with one in it, it automatically makes me cringe. The second problem was the ending, I know this book is supposed to be part of a series, but I it still bugged me that the book left me with a lot of questions. Overall this is a pretty good book; if you like books with fairies and don't mind a love triangle then you will really enjoy these books.

Veiled Mist

Excerpt:
“Then what…” he stepped back still holding the gun to Hanna’s head. “Todd? You took Todd? Put him down now!”
Hanna heard the click. Michael was about to pull the trigger. She wanted to do as he’d said, and was about to, but the African warrior appeared near the Cabin and shook his head. “No.”
“You put him down,” Michael hissed.
“We can’t. We need to get him to a hospital. If we don’t, he’ll die. Please let us…”
“You’re not taking my son anywhere near those traitors.” Michael jammed the rifle’s nozzle against Hanna’s head, hurting her and almost making her lose her grip.
“If you shoot me I’ll drop him,” Hanna said.
“Put him down.”
The warrior continued to shake his head. Hanna wished he’d do more than that. A little help would be nice. “You can shoot me, but I won’t put him down.”
“Hanna,” John whispered.
“He knows his son will die if we drop him,” Hanna said.
“Do you have a death wish?” John hissed.
All three heard a distant sound coming from their left. Hanna wondered if her guess was right.
“Put the gun down Michael,” John II said.
Hanna couldn’t see her grandfather.
“Williams? You’re behind this?”
“I am, drop the gun.”
“You bastard. I won’t let you take my son from me.”
“I’m not taking him from you, just getting him to the hospital. You can hate me later, but I’m going to do this even if I have to shoot you.”
Michael lowered the rifle. “You’re going to pay for this. Did you kill my dogs?”
“They’re resting. Hanna and John, head to the clearing.”
Hanna heard the radio static.
“Ray, how far are you?” John II asked.
“One minute.”
“It’s the chopper,” John whispered excitedly, as they made their way to the clearing. “Wow, this is so cool.”
“Quiet John, we can still get shot,” Hanna said.
The chopper now hovered above their heads, its bright beam aimed at the clearing. Hanna realized they stood on a putting green. She took a few steps back and crouched to protect Todd from the wind caused by the chopper’s blades.
“Why are you doing this?” Michael screamed as the chopper prepared to land.
“Because I owe you. Please, Michael, let us save him.”
“No,” Michael screamed, darting towards Hanna.
Her grandfather fired. Michael took another three steps and fell. The black chopper landed. The pilot got out and helped them with Todd. Moments later the chopper lifted off. Both Hanna and John watched speechless as their grandfather and Michael grew smaller. The chopper banked to the right and they lost sight of Tornado Hill. Hanna felt for the boy’s pulse. It hadn’t changed; it was weak, but steady. She looked down once more and saw the warrior’s green glow sliding down the hill, like a water stream.

I loved the premise of this book and was really looking forward to reading it, however when I did start it I had a hard time finishing it. My first impression of Hanna with her sense of entitlement and disregard for other peoples feeling ruined the story for me. The rest of the characters in the book were not very enjoyable either, the only one I really liked was Count Dracula. The storyline was well thought out, original and very creative. The writing was done very well and there were certain parts in the book that held my interest. While the book is good and other people are sure to enjoy it, I personally could not get past my dislike of the characters. I have started reading another one of her books Souls of Darkness, I hope I like the characters in this book better.
