Bitten

Welcome to the sixth day of the Bitten blog tour. It will run until July 16th and will feature excerpts and new author interviews each day. But first, here is the obligatory blurb about the novel to settle you into this dark world

A predator stalks a cold northern Minnesotan town. There is talk of wolves walking on two legs and attacking people in the deep woods. Lauren Westlake, resourceful and determined F.B.I Agent, has found a connection between the strange murders in the north and a case file almost a hundred years old. Traveling to the cold north, she begins an investigation that spirals deep into the darkness of mythology and nightmares. Filled with creatures of the night and an ancient romance, the revelation of who hunts beneath the moon is more grisly than anyone could have imagined.

A few questions for the author:

Are you fun to go on vacation with?

Not in the slightest. I like to go on vacations by myself. My wife puts up with it, even when I am stickler about what time we leave and packing. Usually after the first day I relax and I can enjoy myself. The exception is San Francisco. That city brings out the very best in me. Most people that have seen me there say I am a different person.

How do you feel about being interviewed?

I have grown to love it, especially radio interviews.

Why do you think what you do matters?

I am not sure it does. I think story-telling and critical thinking matter, and they can both be achieved through the act of reading. So I guess, in some small way, I contribute to that.

Have you ever found true love?

Yes, and we have been together for 12 years. Though true love comes in many forms. Writing is a true love. Thinking is a true love. I often find that people mean romantic love, of which I have found the perfect person, but there are plenty of other domains in which you can have true love.

Here be an excerpt for your enjoyment:

Chapter VI

The man sat in the empty room. His hands were handcuffed to the table through a thick silver ring. The sheriff had pushed back his hood revealing a man in complete disarray. Wild hair, unkempt and looking as if it had been involved in a hurricane, framed haunting gray eyes and a twisted nose.

Lauren sat in the chair across from him.

The sheriff stood against the wall.

Wool cap removed, his hair was wild as well. There was a manila folder; it was a bluff really, as it only contained his booking papers.

“So we are booking you as John Doe because you cannot remember your name? Is that how you would like to proceed?” The aptly named John Doe simply stared at Lauren with empty gray eyes. “I will take your silence as an affirmation that we understand each other, Mr. Doe. Would you like to explain to us what you were doing at the Leftwich residence?” asked Lauren.

Her voice was direct.

The transient looked at the agent with a gaze that seemed to be trapped a thousand miles away. Deep reservoirs of nothingness spiraled into a strange darkness. “Rivers are cold. Great darkness all around us. Fate binds us. Drives us. Have to finish. Have to finish.”

Agent Westlake turned to look toward the sheriff, who simply looked annoyed. He walked over, standing between the agent and the transient. Hands flat against the table, he glared at the dirty wretch of a being. “You ran from police. We found some things on your person that may or may not have been stolen. We suspect you broke into the Leftwich house. If you didn’t do anything, best speak up now. Clear all this up.”

“What do you have to finish?” queried Lauren.

The transient looked at her then.

There was something haunting in his gaze, frightening. “There were pieces. Pieces that go together.” He shifted, the heavy coat making his face sweat. “I have to find all the pieces and put them back together. Can’t build the tower until you have all the pieces.”

Montgomery was unconvinced.

He did not buy into psychosis or therapist-babble. Things were or they weren’t, and the two would never meet. “Give us something or you are spending the night.”

“It’s warm here. No blankets. No snow,” he whispered, rubbing his hands together.

Lauren looked at him sadly.

She wasn’t certain what to make of him.

Montgomery, however, had a much different idea about the transient and he was not attempting to veil it. No-nonsense policing was common in rural areas. Something happened and somebody was responsible. His way was to get it done and out of the way, to return to peace.

Lauren came from a place where there was always darkness, always more to be done. “Sheriff Montgomery,” spoke Lauren, drawing his attention. The older man looked at her with a hard gaze. “Could I speak to you outside?”

The sheriff did not acknowledge her immediately.

“Sheriff, could I speak to you outside?”

He met Lauren’s eyes.

Something angry behind his look drew her attention. His manner was sedated, but a fire burned deep. The murders had stirred him, drawn out a much more emotional person. For a moment, his gaze shifted back to the transient. With an angry sigh, he pushed himself to his feet and pulled open the heavy door at the corner of the interrogation room.

“We will be back in a moment,” spoke Lauren as she stood.

The transient did not respond.

His eyes followed her as she left and joined the sheriff in the cold adjoining hallway. Montgomery faced away from her, his arms crossed. She looked back at the closed door and was startled to see his face so close to hers when she turned back.

“This is my investigation, Agent Westlake. You expressed an interest in assisting me. Interference, making judgments, was not part of the plan.”

“I have no intention of interfering in your investigation.”

He pointed into the room. “That man in there is hiding something. This crazy bullshit is just that. Shit.”

She resisted the urge to yell back, to escalate the argument. Calm prevailed. “That may be. We have nothing to hold him indefinitely. What we have is circumstantial. His presence at the Leftwich property was strange, I will admit that. However, we don’t know if what he had in the bag was stolen. Even if it was, it is worth a small amount. We would be hard-pressed to make something stick.”

Montgomery crossed his arms once more. “He was trespassing. And even without a broken window or door, there is still breaking and entering.”

“His mind isn’t in it. He smells like he lives under a bridge. We should keep him here overnight and turn him over to mental health authorities.”

Montgomery scowled. “We don’t have any mental health facilities this far north. I agree we should keep him here at least the night. I will think about sending him over to one of those Christian, Jesus centers, or whatever the hell they are called.”

Mrs. Meadows, portly and smelling as if she had a date at a brothel, approached. “Agent Westlake?”

Lauren had crossed her arms. Turning, she appeared more fearsome than she would have liked. “Mrs. Meadows, what can I do for you?”

She looked to the sheriff and then to Lauren.

Throwing his hands in the air, he marched back into the interrogation room. “I’ll release him in the morning. But I don’t think this is over. I think that little son of a bitch in there has something to do with it.”

“He feels wrong for it.” The sheriff grabbed the handle of the door, pausing for a moment, as Lauren continued. “We have a full moon tonight. Maybe we will luck out with him in a cell.”

With a harrumph, the sheriff re-entered the interrogation room. Mrs. Meadows had stood by quietly, watching the exchange with a mute expression. “There is a man asking for you. Dominic McManus. Seen him around town, quite the statuesque biscuit.”

“Mrs. Meadows,” replied Lauren with a little laugh as if to reprimand her.

“I just call it how I see it, Agent Westlake. If a tall drink of man like that was looking for me, I might not keep him waiting.”

She gave her a look that was to say ha ha.

Moving ahead of Mrs. Meadows, she walked out into the open room of the police station and suddenly felt as if she had not showered in days. Not the pleasant desirable kind of dirty, but the how-could-he-possibly-look-at-me-when-I-look-like-this type of dirty.

He wore loose jeans; though the denim fabric did little to hide the perfect sculpt of his powerful muscles. His blue eyes were like candles that lit up the room, drawing all the attention. A shaved face marked him as much younger than Lauren would have guessed.

And as he spoke, she saw that his perfect lips remained unchanged. “I hope that you will not think me too forward, Ms. Westlake.”

“Lauren.”

He took a step forward, gesturing with one of his hands. “Of course, Lauren. I wanted to see you. After the other night, I felt like I owed you a proper evening.”

Lauren felt suddenly claustrophobic, as if all eyes in the room were on her. And in some respects, she was not incorrect. The deputy stood next to Mrs. Meadows, bumping her with a free elbow as he took a sip of his coffee. Glancing back, Lauren flashed a playful, dark glare.

“That isn’t necessary, Dominic. It was very kind of you to walk me home…” As she trailed off, she saw Collins and her macabre assistant emerge from a blind corner. She stuttered her words as she tried to speak again. “I mean, it was…”

He stepped forward, taking one of her trembling hands in his own powerful one. “I insist, Lauren,” he spoke slowly, eloquently.

She rolled her eyes as she heard the snicker of the deputy, ruining her moment. Flashing another angry glare, he caught the drift and stalked away, hiding his face behind the coffee mug. “I would love to, Dominic. I have some things to do just now.”

He smiled. His teeth were perfect as well.

“Of course, I understand.”

She felt quite girly in that moment; legs twisting and shoulders were bobbing like she was quite uncomfortable. Heat rushed to her face and other places she would not have cared to share. And the smile that came to her face was one that felt like it would be permanent.

“Could you meet me at my room?” Another snicker and some whispering. She cleared her throat to continue. “Around 8 to pick me up.”

He bowed. It was a strangely endearing motion and was gone as quickly as it came. He kissed her lightly on the cheek and brushed her arms with his hands as he left. For a moment, it felt like the world had gone silent. The suddenness and brashness of the medical examiner’s voice was sufficient to jar her free from nirvana.

“He is grade A sweetness there, honey. I’ve seen him around town,” lusted Collins, lowering her thick-rimmed glasses and placing a heavy hand on her hip. She turned to Lauren with a wink. “Saw him last summer out at the lake. Someone was quite generous with that one.”

Collins’ assistant limped toward Lauren. Perhaps it was her suspicious nature, or that they had as a unit nearly ruined a wonderful moment, but she was suddenly quite interested in why a medical examiner’s assistant would be limping.

“How did you get the limp, Mr…?” She paused for his name as they had never been introduced. “Or would you prefer assistant? Mr. Coroner’s assistant? Or Collins’ assistant?”

“Brian, ma’am. Brian Erham.”

“How did you get that limp you have there, Brian Erham?”

Collins looked at the agent with a sarcastic grin. “Looking for suspects everywhere, Agent Westlake?”

Lauren’s smile disappeared, her eyes sparkling.

“My apologies. Must be the moon.”

“His limp is part of the problem, or rather the reason we are paying you this late-afternoon visit. There was a break-in at the morgue.”

Agent Westlake could not hide her surprise. The image of bodies flooded her mind: broken glass and blood pooling made her uncomfortable. “What was taken?”

Collins blanched and Brian, the assistant, turned away. “That is where it gets weird. Nothing was touched really. The front door was destroyed, hinges snapped and splintered. There was nothing disturbed, except for the Jane Doe.”

“The Jane Doe?”

Collins scrunched her nose, pulling free a folder rife with paper clips and binders. “I guess Jane Doe is not really appropriate anymore. Her name is Evelyn Marshall. Not local, she was from the Twin Cities down south. We don’t know why she was here. I suppose that is your job, Agent Westlake.”

She extended the folder to Lauren who took it.

Thumbing through the pages, she scowled. She read the pages silently in a scattered barrage of alternating fonts and gruesome pictures, ageless renditions of the person Evelyn Marshall used to be. “What was done to the Jane Doe? I mean to the body of the late Ms. Marshall?”

“Mrs. Marshall from the records. She is still married to some businessman. I don’t think that will be a pleasant conversation, hey.”

Lauren felt irritation creep in. She wished to get to the point. Dominic was removed for a moment, replaced instead with death and sadness. “What happened to the body of Mrs. Marshall?”

Collins, her vaudevillian beehive brightly colored, gestured to Brian. “He was there. Saw the whole damn thing. Scared the holy hell out him. It is quite a story.”

Lauren closed the file and crossed her hands in front of her body. “Mr. Erham, what happened?”

He was frightened. He already had a strange manner, which was only confounded by shifting eyes and a penchant for rubbing his arms roughly. “I was cleaning up. Ms. Collins had gone home for the day. I do the closing stuff, make sure everything is stocked. Locked up and all that, ya know?”

Lauren nodded.

He looked back to the creaking door of the interrogation room and saw Montgomery appear. “Anyways, I was closing up. I locked the door because––because sometimes I worry something will get me when I’m down there.”

Montgomery sauntered close, arms crossed. It was his trademark. He looked to Westlake, who nodded knowingly. “We have some trouble?” he asked.

Lauren ignored him.

“Continue, Mr. Erham. What happened next?”

He seemed to grow more frightened by the moment. “I heard some glass break upstairs. I started up the stairs to check it out and then I saw it.”

“Saw what?” asked the deputy with wide eyes.

Clearly, he was taken in by the ambiance.

Lauren shook her head.

“What did you see, Mr. Erham?”

“It was big, like human-sized. But, it didn’t move like a man. It sort of ducked and crawled on all fours, but then stood up again.” He gestured to his arms. “There was fur or hair all over it. Slicked back in some places, standing up on ends in others. Then the sound….”

He visibly shuddered, his eyes closing.

Lauren grasped a chair and set it down in front of the shivering assistant. “Have a seat, Mr. Erham.”

Obliging, he continued. “There was this growl, but it wasn’t human. It sounded like something was dying and wanting to kill all in one. It came at me when I was at the top of the stairs. I tried to shut the door, but it was too fast.”

Everyone in the room was hooked. They leaned forward, eyes wide, waiting for what came next. “It brushed past me, knocking me down the stairs.” He gestured to his leg. “When I hit the ground, I knew something was hurt. I crawled into the corner, trying to get away from it. I didn’t know…”

“That must have been very frightening, Brian.”

He gulped. “Yeah,” he replied with a stammer.

“And then what happened?”

He shifted in his seat uncomfortably.

“It looked back at me. I couldn’t see its face, but its chest just heaved. Then its head lifted in the air and I heard it breathe, like it smelled the air. It walked over to the drawers. The one with Mrs. Marshall in it and opened it. Opened it hard. He pulled the damn runner all the way out. It was loud when it clattered on the floor.”

Meadows brought him a cup of coffee with a weak smile. He graciously accepted it, cradling it in two hands. “Then it––then it reached out with one of its claws.”

“Claws?” asked Montgomery incredulously, and much louder than he would have wished. He was not the only one wound up by the young assistant’s story. The police station had grown deathly quiet as he conveyed the tale.

Brian made a gesture with his hands, the cruelest manner in which he could twist his fingers and hand. “It was tough to see, but they looked like long, slender fingers with sharp tips. It dug into the body, pulling free skin and organs.”

Lauren inched closer, having taken a seat on another of the chairs. It was turned so that she could lay her arms over the top of it. “Did you get a good look at it? Male or female?”

He swallowed hard again, his hands shaking. “It was tall. Real big. Strong. I don’t think it was female.”

“Male?” she volunteered with a half-hearted smile. He shook his head. “Not male? But not female? What exactly are we talking about?”

“It was a creature. Some thing,” he answered with a hoarse voice.

Montgomery flashed Lauren a look that she had come to understand in their brief time working together. He did not believe the intern.

“Have you had anything to drink today, Mr. Erham? Any drugs? Took a long, slow whiff of some chemicals in the morgue?” queried the sheriff, his tone shifting from mystified to disbelief.

Brian looked at the sheriff.

“No, sir. You don’t believe me?”

Agent Westlake placed a reassuring hand on his leg. “We believe that something happened, Mr. Erham. What we are not certain of is whether your story accurately reflects what did happen.”

He looked hopeless as he lowered his eyes and placed his hands on his knees. Lauren leaned back and stood from her chair, pacing past him. Collins seemed uncomfortable by the entire situation.

It was the deputy, however, who broke the tense silence. “You think it was some kind of monster? Like a werewolf, hey?”

Montgomery and Lauren flashed him a dark glare.

He did not shrink away. Brian Erham, frightened medical examiner’s assistant, was suddenly quite elated that someone had joined his bandwagon. “Something supernatural, hey. I’ve heard stories about wolves in the woods, walking on two legs like men.”

Montgomery uncrossed his arms and grunted. “What about witches then? Maybe zombies running about attacking folks?”

The deputy and the examiner’s assistant clammed up good and quick. Lauren picked up the folder with Marshall’s wayward identity.

She felt exhausted, worn thin. “I think we have reached the end of rational discussion here. I think I will retire for the night. I have other plans to attend to. We can pick this up again in the morning.”

Mrs. Meadows, heady from the tales of things crawling about in the dark and handsome strangers spinning yarns of great affection, snickered. “With a certain tall drink of brooding and handsome.”

Lauren blushed and Montgomery cast a comical grin.

“Seems I missed a bit while I was walking our John Doe to his night-time accommodations. I take it Agent Westlake has an interesting night ahead of her?”

The deputy was quick to chime in. “McManus came by. Taking the agent for a proper evening.”

“Sounds fancy.”

Lauren thought to comment. But whatever she said would simply fuel the joking she was receiving. With a wave behind her, she departed. Pushing out into the cold late afternoon of the small Minnesotan town, she realized it was already quite dark.

Just watching the scene had something disturbing squeezing deep inside her. It wasn’t sudden; it had crept up throughout the day and through each second that Andy had spent with Gabriel tonight. He could be the perfect father, the perfect man and role model for her son. She cleared her throat but nearly choked when she whispered, “Goodnight, Gabriel. Have a good sleep.”
This was all so confusing. What did Andy want? Why hadn’t he left, and why was he taking such an interest in Gabriel? Her throat felt all scratchy and tight, but that was only because she wanted to tuck her face in the pillow and cry those thousand tears she’d cried almost every night for Andy. All she’d ever wanted was to be loved.
What he’d done today was horrible, cruel, and she wanted to scream and yell “Why?” He had stayed, caring for her tonight and today at the hospital in a way that made her feel important, special, but she also knew she wasn’t any of that to him, not in the way she wanted to be. It was the babies. She was just the vessel, a warm cocoon for a rich man’s babies, and that was something she could not allow herself to forget. He was powerful, he was rich, and his family was dangerous.
“Are you all right?” He brushed his finger across her brows.
“Yeah, fine,” she blurted as she pulled back, her skin burning from the spark of his touch.
“You look worried about something, upset.” He was watching her, studying her as if he knew what she was thinking, and she couldn’t have that.
“No, I’m just...” She couldn’t think of what to say when her brain suddenly blanked out. That always happened when Andy stood so close to her and watched her with compelling blue eyes that could set her soul on fire, so she shut her mouth and shook her head.
He sat right beside her on the bed so his hip pressed into hers. She knew all too well what those slim hips and tight abs looked like naked and pressed against her hips, nestled between her thighs. It was almost too much heat for her, so she squirmed and tried to slide over and away from him.
“You all right? You look uncomfortable.”
He wouldn’t even look away. Uncomfortable, hell yeah. And it was all his fault. “Just stiff is all.”
“Can I?” He rested his hand over her swollen belly, where the babies had been kicking furiously for the last hour.
He was connecting with her babies. She wanted to scream and yell at him, “Hell no! Keep your hands off!” but her body was betraying her. The reality was that she wanted him to touch her, to run his hands over every square inch of her.
He didn’t wait for her to say anything, but then, she couldn’t get her tongue to move. The damn thing had thickened, and her throat had completed dried up as he invaded her space. My God, he even smelled good, and his scruffy jaw...she longed to reach up and run her hands over it.
His touch sent shockwaves through her, and the babies responded in kind. She’d swear they jumped from his touch, as if they knew that Andy was their daddy. He smiled that charming, boyish grin she’d only seen a few times. Never once had he smiled just for her.
“Wow, that’s amazing. Did you feel that?”
For a moment, she felt herself being pulled into his joy, just like a little boy’s first Christmas, but she had to look away, to move away from his touch, because she’d never again be treated as if she was nothing. Andy Friessen could turn on a dime, and she’d never play second again. “Yeah, I did. Listen, I’m tired.” She scooted over and lifted his hand off her belly. She couldn’t look at him even though she could feel the sharp change in him as if she’d just ripped away all his joy. So why was she feeling guilty? She wasn’t the bad guy here.

2012 was an amazing year in the publishing world for me, and it started with The Forgotten Child, which landed on the Amazon bestseller list for western romance and romance series. With the publication of each novel and short story, each one made its way to the top ten for its respective genre. 2013 has seen me posted in the top 100 authors on Amazon for romantic suspense and mystery/thrillers, police procedural.

Where did it all begin? In 2008, I published my first novel, The Captain’s Lady, a contemporary military romance, through The Wild Rose Press. This year I have a crazy writing schedule with four books scheduled for release and six short stories.

I write three genres, edgy romantic suspense (Walk the Right Road Series), western romance (Finding Love ~ The Outsider Series), and young adult mystery, and I warn my readers to expect the unexpected. I’m the mother of three children, one a special needs child. We live on a small Island in the Pacific Northwest, where I advocate for the environment and the rights of special needs children. Somewhere in my busy schedule, I do find time to write. I encourage you to contact me by email; I do answer every email I receive.

Stay tuned. There is more to come from the Walk the Right Road Series and Finding Love ~ The Outsider Series.

And to my readers and all of you who have shared my stories with your family and friends, a big heartfelt thank you.

Review

****This book was part of a blog tour I received a copy for my honest review****
Travis is only nineteen he had to drop out of high school to work so him and his mother would not be evicted. He hates his job and spends his nights with one girl after another; he finds the teen program at the fire station meets a good girl and falls in love. He refuses to tell her the truth about things because he believes she won't love him back, things go from bad to worse. Can Travis find a way to make his situation better, will he come clean to the girl he loves or will lose the first really good thing in his life? I loved this book, Travis is such a great character his problems are real and heartbreaking. He takes on so much to make sure his mother and him have a place to stay, but no matter how much he works he just can't keep up. He is ashamed of his situation, it's so sad how hard this guys life is. The passion he discovers and his goals of wanting to be a firefighter were admirable and I loved his reasoning behind it. The romance in this book was not focused on the physical but more on the emotional connection between two people. Girls Love Travis Walker is a fast read with amazing characters that show you how strong some people can be.

Review

****This book was part of a blog tour I received an ARC for my honest review****
Zoe was lured back for her third try at reality t.v. because Chip promised her a payday, he just "forgot" to mention she would be the host not a contestant until she gets there. Zoe has pushed people away and used her looks so people won't know her secrets. When they start filming in the middle of nowhere sparks fly between these two headstrong people. Will Zoes past come back to ruin things for the two of them or will Zoe finally get her HEA? I was so excited to read this book, Zoe is the snarky bitch from two previous books in this series and I loved to hate her in those. She is still snarky and comes off as a bitch at times in this book, but you get to see another side of her and understand why she acts that way. Chip was more of a shadow in the other books so it was nice to get to know more about him, he is headstrong and manipulative, but you also get to see his tender loving side when it comes to Zoe. The two of them have some great clashes and the path to their HEA is not easy. I really liked this book; the author did a great job of taking two unlikable characters and making you fall in love with them.

Kissing her on the forehead, he says in a rough voice, “You are sin, Ellie and we might as well do it right.”
He leans down and begins to kiss her, teasing her lips with little nibbles asking for entrance. Ellie opens her lips and sighs as Jasper deepens the kiss. Tugging the pins from her hair so it cascades over his hands, he reaches for the clasp of the dress at the base of her neck. He pulls both her dress and bra down to her waist leaving her breasts exposed to the cool air. Instantly they pucker and strain toward the sexy vampire that was devouring her mouth like a thirsty man. Bringing his hands up to grasp her breasts, Jasper begins to pull and pinch the nipples almost to the point of pain then sooths the peaks with a gentle stroke of his thumbs. Ellie groans with the pleasure of Jasper’s touch and arches into his hands begging for more.
Pulling back from her lips, he looks down, sees the glazed look of passion on her face, and is envious of Ian at having the passion of this luscious woman.

Pinned Up

Pinned Up
3 of 5 stars false1/2
The pumps are red satin with a peep toe, a shiny black contrast heel, and a ruffle detail at the vamp. The cat eyeliner with exaggerated lashes and the red lipstick on my porcelain face make the forties inspired look reach perfection.
I enjoy being a pin-up model…
C. Michelle’s vibrant debut novel, Pinned Up is full of snappy dialogue, edgy humor, and a lot of heart. This fun look into the world of a modern-day pin-up model is one wild ride!
Twenty-five-year-old Nina Moretti lives a double life of sorts. She’s a victim advocate during the day and as a side gig, lives out her 1940s fetish as a pin-up model in San Francisco, California. While she may not “do” serious relationships, she has fulfillment in her work and hanging out with her best friend, Kade—the greatest sidekick any woman could possibly want. All is well in Nina’s hectic, but satisfying life…
That is, until she meets Josh, a stunningly handsome man who has a notorious reputation as a ladies’ man. For his part, Josh is reluctant to commit to any woman, largely due to his loving, yet overbearing mother. Nina, however, sparks his interest in a way that no other woman has before. As they navigate the pitfalls of romantic entanglement, both come to realize their pasts are intertwined in ways they could never imagine. Perhaps, they have more in common than just their fear of relationships. What are two people afraid of commitment supposed to do?

Review

****The author provided me with a copy of this book for my honest review****
Nina is a victim’s advocate who moonlights as a pin-up model, after doing one of her shoots she meets Josh. Josh is a gorgeous playboy who hasn't had any interest in monogamy, until Nina. The two of them start a relationship, but both of them have secrets and not all of them are their own to tell. With jealousy and trust issues getting in the way this couple has to figure out if they can put it all on the line and make things work. Will they stay together or will things beyond their control tear them apart?  This was a good book, what made it such a fun read was the personalities of the characters and the way they interacted with each other. Nina was great; she was smart, witty and embraced her sexuality. She has a sad past and because of things that happened to her she has trust issues. Josh is a hot, funny and at times very sweet guy; he has issues with relationships because of his mother. Kade, Nina’s best friend/brother from another mother was my favorite character. He was sarcastic, made inappropriate comments, eavesdropped on peoples conversations, had no boundaries and owned his personality with the flaws  hanging out there, no apologies just this is who I am. Emme who is also Nina’s friend, I won't say much about her other than the fact that I think she is a scandalous trifling hoe bag and I wanted to punch her in the face at the end of the book. This book started out really good, with interesting characters and an entertaining dialogue, but about sixty-five to seventy percent of the way through it started to get slow and a bit repetitive. Once it gets to about eighty percent it picks right back up and throws you through a loop. Pinned Up was a good book, there is a ton of humor and a few surprises to shake things up.

Tayla doesn't believe him. After all, no human in the world has special powers, or do they? Things suddenly take a downward spiral turn as Tayla finds herself immersed in their world. Excerpt
The mist carried along the river banks, floating over the small stream and eventually filling the forest. Iris brushed her brown wavy bangs from her forehead and stepped back, positioning herself in front of a large redwood tree. Her body trembled as she began to think about what would happen next. Visibility began to diminish and she didn’t know how much longer she could hold out until the mist became too thick to tolerate.
Suppressing her anxiety, she closed her eyes and concentrated, feeling the vibration of a squirrel’s movement through the tree ahead. Once she made extrasensory contact, the squirrel quickly jumped from one tree limb to the next, eventually landing on the ground and running into the thick of the mist.
Through the squirrel’s vision, Iris saw the animal jump over broken branches, make its way through thick leaves, and stop just short of reaching Felecie. Able to make out her hazy silhouette in the mist, she saw Felecie step forward and flick her curly bright carrot-colored hair over her right shoulder.
From afar, Iris gasped, noticing that Felecie wasn’t alone. She made out Maka’s outline from her waist-length mini braids. When Maka finally stepped out from the mist, her caramel-colored skin contrasted Felecie’s pale glow.  However, it didn’t matter how both teenage girls looked. What concerned her more was the power they possessed.
Iris hesitated. If she attacked, they’d immediately be aware of her location. She didn’t want to make the first move, but she felt that she had no other choice. She swallowed hard.
At her command the squirrel launched its attack, jumping and tearing at Felecie’s face. Felecie screamed and fell back, landing on the wet dirt. Maka chased the squirrel into the bushes, annoyed when she lost sight of it. She cursed under her breath, helping her friend back to her feet.
“That’s it!” Felecie brushed the leaves and dirt from her blue tight fitting jeans. “I’m going to kill that animal loving bi—”
“Wait,” Maka interrupted her. “Please let me.”
Iris thanked the squirrel in a thought and she opened her eyes. Maybe that would buy her enough time to locate Sina. She retreated further back into the woods until the mist became lighter, making it easier to see the environment around her. Sweat collected on her brow, and just as she raised her foot to step over a large tree trunk, a thin branch wrapped itself around her midsection, yanking her off to the side.
            “Watch out!”
A bolt of lightning struck the ground, missing Iris by inches. The branch released its grip and fell to the forest floor. Iris watched Sina, dressed in a long black trench coat, black jeans, and a white shirt dotted with dirt, walk from behind a large redwood tree. She swiped back the corners of her dark hair behind her ears. Directly behind Sina, Iris saw a levitating, glowing brown ball—Sina’s sphere—hovering a few inches from her right shoulder.
“You have to be careful next time”—Sina walked over to Iris—“that bolt was meant for you.”
“Sorry. I’m still learning.” Iris caught her breath. She could still feel the heat and static electricity from the bolt resonating through the air and the tiny hairs on her arm stood straight. “That was close.”
Still new to the whole “sphere” thing, the idea of always having it at the ready skipped Iris’ mind. Months had passed since her parents told her about her birthright and of her power, but calling on it still seemed unreal, until now.
Sina immediately held up her hand and closed her eyes. “They’re headed this way.”
Iris began to panic. “What do we do now?”
With the power of electricity at her disposal, Maka was considered to be the most dangerous of the Dark Carriers—those who pledged their allegiance to Apere, the dark guardian. There was also Anatoly and out of all three of them, Iris feared him the most because of his unpredictable nature. Before all this madness, he had once been her friend. Now, having chosen the path of darkness, he’d killed several Light Carriers in the past by burning them alive with his gift of fire. She didn’t believe he was rotten to the core, but hoped that one day, he would renounce his loyalty and come back to their side. But that day felt a long way off since Sina had trapped him inside a shallow cave just north of their location.
Being the most experienced, Sina taught Iris everything she needed to know about their type. Her mother had been part of the ongoing struggle and instilled within her the means to survive. In return, Sina became stronger and led the little group of Light Carriers to overcome the growing conflict against the Dark Carriers.
Iris nodded and looked over her shoulder. “They’re too strong, Sina. We need to get out of here.”
Sina slowly opened her brown eyes and stared at Iris. “We are as strong as they are. We just need to be smarter.”
Iris glanced around. “Where’s Darrien when we need him?”
The strongest of the Light Carriers,  Darrien often appeared and disappeared without notice. He hated confrontation. However, his gift of being able to absorb and release energy came in handy during times like this.
“Darrien is scouting ahead,” Sina replied. “Just in case we don’t make it in time.”
“What do you mean by ‘if we don’t make it’?” Iris breathed in heavily.
Sina raised her hands. “I’ll slow them down. Just watch my back.”
Iris saw the trees and branches around them and the dirt and roots beneath them come to life. Sina’s gift of controlling the natural environment proved to be exactly what they needed at that moment. Under her command, the branches travelled toward Felecie and Maka in unison. Sina wasn’t going to kill them. It wasn’t an option. Light Carriers didn’t kill.
Ten large trees in front of them popped up from the ground, detaching themselves from their roots. They fell in large thuds and squirmed across the land like fast moving snakes. The ground buckled, raising the dirt into huge mounds swelling like a large tidal wave. Following Sina’s lead, Iris concentrated hard, letting her beautiful gray sphere appear in front of her. She called out to the animals in the vicinity with her mind, commanding them to follow the attack. Deer and bears from miles away joined in the pursuit. Even the smallest of animals listened to her telepathic call.
Moments later, Iris and Sina waited.
Sina placed her hands on the ground and taking a moment to feel the earth’s vibration, she finally spoke. “That should slow them down.” She stood up.
The mist began to reside and the air became thinner, revealing the chaos in front of them. Bright lightning flashes filled the clouded sky, and Iris sensed that Maka had overpowered several of her animals in just one strike. She made contact with an eagle hovering above the carnage and she let her sight intertwine with its own. Sharing the eagle’s vision, she witnessed Maka and Felecie as small dots on the ground below, surrounded by her animals, walls of dirt, and trees.
“What do you see?” Sina asked.
“They’re surrounded by the animals.” Pressure lifted from Iris’ chest and she smiled.
“Good.” Sina grabbed Iris’ hand and began to drag her away. “We need to hurry, Minneapolis is a three hour walk from here.”
“Can’t we just find a ride or something? We’ve been walking for days. My feet hurt.”
“You know we can’t. We’ll put other people, the non-Carriers in danger.”

 Review

****This book was part of a blog tour I received a copy for my honest review****

Julia and Ryan are married and happy together even though they don't get to spend much time together with their hectic work schedule they are still very much in love. One night of violence and a colleague trying to save Ryan changes everything. This female colleague insinuates herself into their lives and it begins to rip the two of them apart. When Julia reaches her breaking point and runs, the two of them are put to the test. Will the incredible love they share survive? This book is just, Wow is the only word I can think of to describe it. The love between Julia and Ryan is incredible to see and you can feel it through out the entire book. The problems they faced were what a lot of married couples have, trying to balance work with spending time together. Jealousy and having to deal with insecurities at times, it was refreshing to see a book where the characters talked things out and everything wasn't magically fixed with sex. I really enjoyed the book, but I did find myself continually getting frustrated with Ryan and his obliviousness towards Jane. I didn't understand how he really couldn't see what she was doing and when he noticed what it was doing to Julia, why didn't he man up more and put a stop to it sooner? Beyond that A Love Like This was the perfecting ending to this great trilogy.

Of Consuming Fire

Of Consuming Fire
By Micah Persell
Paranormal Romance
Date Published: 7/8/2013

After millennia of faithfully guarding his post in the Garden of Eden, the cherubim Jayden flees. He leaves everything—including his sword—behind, disobeying orders for the first time in his existence, and all because he can sense her: his Temptation. She’s close, and Jayden can’t allow himself to be weak: to fall the way his brothers have for centuries whenever they encounter their very human, very beautiful Temptations. But he has a job to finish. He must regain the integrity the Trees have lost through being tested by vile humans, and it will require blood. It’s his only purpose, and he will finish it, whether he wants to or not; the Compulsion will ensure he has no choice. And if seeking out the humans he must kill brings Jayden into contact with the one woman who could destroy everything he is, he may never be able to resist her.

A victim of rape, Grace Tucker, Ph.D. knows that she can and must keep all men at a distance at any cost. She’s spent years perfecting her arsenal of man-deflecting weapons; her weight and acerbic wit are just two of her most effective munitions. Grace pours herself into her work, constantly seeking to fill the void of self-worth left empty by her attackers’ horrifying actions. And her latest job—translating a dead language engraved into an ancient sword—could be just the thing to finally launch her career and make Grace feel alive for the first time in years.

Neither Jayden nor Grace is prepared for what happens when they meet. A terrible accident places Grace at death’s door, and Jayden allows the unthinkable to take place out of guilt: he lets his intended victims heal her with the fruit from the Tree of Eternal Life. Grace immediately Impulse-pairs with him, an outcome he should have expected as she is the one woman on the earth who can bring him down.

EXCERPT
It hurt. God, it hurt so bad.

And why were they pushing on it so hard? Touching her. Jericho and Dahlia’s hands were weapons themselves, adding to her agony as they applied pressure to the gaping wound marring Grace’s gut.
She tried to tell them to stop, was sure that she had, but she only tasted blood on her tongue.

That thing—the most beautiful, terrifying being she had ever seen—had…killed her. She was dying.

And maybe that was okay. She was so tired of being afraid. Of looking for someone to hurt her around every corner. She wasn’t afraid right now, and it was the first time that’d happened in years. It almost made the pain worth it.

Almost.

Cold. Her teeth started to chatter. With a rush of relief she realized she could no longer feel their hands upon her. Her body was going blessedly numb.

But it was so cold.

Dahlia scooped her up into her arms and cradled her against her chest, rubbing her hands up and down Grace’s arms. “Shh,” she said. “It’ll be over soon, Red. Shh….”

Grace was still conscious enough to struggle, but when her efforts were unsuccessful, she realized her numb body did not react to Dahlia’s touch as it always reacted to human contact. Without the ability to feel the pain of Dahlia’s touch, Grace was shocked to discover that the other woman’s embrace was…pleasant. It was the first time someone had put their arms around her in—she couldn’t remember. A sudden, intense desire to live roared through her, and Grace tried to fight, to say something. But instead of a sound, her efforts brought another rush of blood.

The strength left her limbs, and she sagged into Dahlia’s lap. Black began to edge in on her vision, so Grace closed her eyes to prevent watching it.

Dahlia tucked Grace’s head into the curve of her neck and began to hum something soft and sweet. Grace smelled cinnamon. She relaxed. If she had to go—

As her senses dimmed, she heard a scuffle.

“Get away from her!” Jericho yelled. “Let her go in peace, for God’s sake.”

“She needs this,” said a voice Grace had only heard twice but immediately recognized as his. “Now! Right now—”

A heavy silence met his insistence, and Grace wondered for a second if she had slipped away into death, but then she felt slices of renewed pain that must mean Dahlia was laying her down again.

The fear that had abandoned her for a few blessed moments rushed back in. What were they doing? She had no way of knowing.

“Quickly,” she heard him say again, desperation dripping from his voice in a near moan.

Another rustle, and then the sweetest scent she’d ever encountered. A mix of peach and sun-warmed earth and sky. She tried to hum in approval, but cut off when she felt a curious sensation where the sword had sliced through her. It started off as a trickling tickle, but soon grew uncomfortably warm. It launched throughout her entire body, causing her back to bow.

She opened her mouth, and her scream rent the air. No flow of blood accompanied it this time, she realized dimly, as her limbs flinched and jerked on their own.

All pain disappeared and in its place was ecstasy. Pleasure like nothing she had ever felt warmed her to the tips of her fingers and toes. She moaned loudly as she turned to her side and curled in on herself. Her hands encountered the torn fabric of her blouse and jacket, but then felt smooth skin where moments ago had been carnage. The pleasure faded, and her fingers tentatively explored her abdomen.

The wound was…gone.

She opened her eyes to a world that was a blur. Colors blended with colors, shapes with shapes. Her fingers rose trembling to her eyes and bumped against her glasses. On instinct she whipped them away, and the world fell into immediate focus. She saw her surroundings with a clarity she had never known before; a clarity she instinctually knew was greater than human capability.

She was lying in a pool of her own blood, its vivid red color causing her to jerk upright. She looked around slowly. Jericho and Dahlia peered at her with cautious hope. “What—?” Grace’s hoarse voice gave out.

A harsh noise behind her caught her attention. “You’re alive,” he said on an exhalation of breath.

She jerked around, her eyes finding him immediately.

He stood close—too close—and his eyes roved over her in a way that could only be described as proprietary. He was gorgeous. He had the beautiful dusky coloring of the exotic Middle East: mouthwatering dark skin, warm black hair that cascaded in waves around his shoulders. She craned her neck back to take in his stature. He was huge—tall and broad—but instead of being terrified, she reveled in his height and the wings that spread behind him and glimmered in the glow of the emergency lights. She sucked in a breath as she glanced over the wide expanse of his chest and down the flowing white robe that covered his body. Her gaze traveled back to his face and was snared by lush, full lashes framing light, honeyed-green eyes.

“Angel…” she heard herself mutter.

And then the world tilted violently as a soft, strong Voice whispered inside her mind: He’s yours. The One.
