Damaged

A new adult romance novel by New York Times & USA Today Bestselling Author H.M. Ward Life sucks. And, as soon as Sidney picks up the pieces something always knocks her back onto her butt. It's never pretty, but this time is different. This time pretty isn't even the right word. Peter is the personification of perfection. It's like he fell off his angel perch in purgatory, because let's face it--any guy that hot has got to be naughty. He was probably sent here to ruin her life. Peter is beyond beautiful with his sexy blue eyes, dark hair, and toned body. Add in his charming wit and Peter is everything Sidney ever wanted in a man, but when things get hot and heavy Peter shows her the door. Sidney takes the walk of shame and leaves. It's the end of the worst blind date ever. Her life couldn't possibly reach higher levels of suckage, but it does. The next morning everything comes crashing down. The insanely hot guy from last night, the one that saw her half naked, is teaching at the front of the class room.

Excerpt

He watches me as I try to crank the engine. It doesn’t start. It doesn’t catch. I look at the little gauges and notice the battery. He’s standing next to me now. “So, you’re a mechanic?”
I shake my head, “I just pretend to be. It makes for more interesting evenings.” I grin at him, not sure what’s come over me. I never talk random guys, but it’s not like he’s random anymore, right? Hot guy’s face falls and I realize that he believes me. “I’m just kidding. I know a little about cars. For instance, I know this one isn’t going anywhere tonight.”
And why’s that?”
Your alternator’s dead. Either that or you shoved a hamster up the tailpipe—” My face falls. I wonder if he did something stupid. Guys do all sorts of stupid things to talk to girls. I get out of his car and slam the door. Then, I tilt my head and cross my arms over my chest. “Tell me that that isn’t the reason the car won’t start.”
He laughs and presses his hand to his chest, shocked that I’d say such a thing. “No, I didn’t do anything like that! And correct me if I’m wrong, but you were the one who came onto me first. I didn’t get here early and sabotage my own car just so I could meet a girl, who I didn’t know was coming.” The way he smiles is contagious. He runs his hands through his dark hair, like he wishes he could say more, but he doesn’t. The corners of his mouth curve and he gives me a look that makes tingles slip over my skin.
I step toward him, smiling too wide. “I did not come onto you!”
You did. Right back in there.” He points toward the restaurant. His face is serious, all smooth features and big blue eyes. “You sat at my table and made me very uncomfortable. I haven’t had such a beautiful woman overtly hit on my like that before. It was quite embarrassing.”
My smile is making it hard for my mouth to hang open in shock. It keeps opening and then my grin snaps my lips shut. “I did not!” I know he’s teasing me, but I can’t stop. I don’t want it to stop and I realize that I’m actually laughing.
His arms are folded over his chest. He taps a finger to his lip like he’s remembering. “You did. You ordered wine and just assumed that I’d put out. Really Sidney, you’ll have to learn to control yourself a little better from now on.” He looks at me out of the corner of his eye, as he glances at his car.
I know he’s baiting me, but I can’t ignore him. I can’t walk away and I don’t want to. He smiles at me with those wicked lips. It makes me want to kiss him, hard. I change tactics. I want to throw him so far off balance that he falls over. I step in front of him and look up at him from under my lashes. “Okay, you caught me. I like you. I want you. I can’t keep my hands off of you. But tell me this, beautiful man; why should I bother controlling myself when I can tell that you want me so much?” Slowly, I step closer to him. Our bodies are a breath apart as I look up into his eyes.
He’s smiling and manages to say, “You shouldn’t.” He watches me, waiting to see what I’ll do. I feel my heart pounding. His eyes drift to my lips and back to my eyes. Every inch of my body flickers to life. I want to feel his hands on me. I want his lips on my mouth. From that look in his eye, I know he wants it too.
I lean in closer, teasing him. I feel his breath on my lips. His scent fills my head and I breath him in. “Are you always this irresistible?”
Are you always this coy? Do you just flirt, leaving your lips way too close to a man that desperately wants to kiss you?”

The Space Between

 3 of 5 stars false
When Drake started the night at his father’s campaign fundraiser, he never imagined he’d end it being conned into buying drugs on the West Side. Losing high-stakes poker has its consequences, but he’d repeatedly face them just to hear Lacey Douglas sing. Drake sees Lacey light up the stage, and he has to have her. But his intentions for being on her side of town turn out to be the reason he can’t. Chicago native Lacey has dreams of the opera, but life has its obstacles. Lacey has come to know her hardships as part of living in the real world and accepts them fully. When Lacey meets the intense and invigorating Drake, a fire is lit inside her, unleashing those dreams again. Two paths that should have never crossed prove to create the exact pairing the other needs. But when their worlds take time to catch up, everything they have is tested. Finding the space between the two sides that challenge them will be hard, but it’s the only place that will keep them together. The Space Between is a new adult contemporary romance.

Review

****This book was part of a blog tour I received a copy for my honest review****
Drake is the adopted rich son of a father in politics, he is bored with the constant superficial parties and seizes any chance he can to escape. When he slips out of a party and joins a poker game he doesn't realize that losing the game will change his life. Lacey has a had a hard life, she takes care of her sick mother, she gives up her own dreams to make sure her mother is taken care of. I liked this book, Drakes changes throughout the book had me going from not liking him to finding him endearing. Lacey had her moments when she seemed like a shrew but overall she was a pretty levelheaded main female character. While the whole rich boy meets poor girl story has been done many times before, the author makes it her own. The problems that the couple had because of people prejudice seemed realistic. There were some inconsistency problems when it came to the characters, just little things that seemed odd. It could use a little bit more editing and some of the words were a little overused. The Space Between is a good read and this author is definitely talented, if you are looking for a book that deals with real issues and has a good ending then I would read this one.

Review

****This book was part of a blog tour I received a copy for my honest review****
This book starts of with a bang and just doesn't stopped.
Rysa Torres things she is just an ordinary student, well as ordinary as she can be with ADHD. She struggles through life unable to remain focused without her medication. All of a sudden she is attacked and she finds out she is a Fate. She is flung into an insane world of shifters, burners and fates. She realises that she has been lied too and kept in the dark and that she is a pawn that could mean the end of the world. Landon and Dragon are the only ones who seem to be able to help her, but Rysa struggles with her feelings for this pair, especially when she realises she may be the end of them.
This is the first book in a new urban fantasy series and the underlying story is truly original and fascinating. Normally there is a lot of world building in the first of a series and that is no different in Games of Fate. There is a lot of information given to you in this book, so much that at times I struggled to formulate what the book was telling me in my mind. Rysa is a fate, but she is a singular, which means she can see the past, present and future. The scenes with Rysa were what I mostly found difficult to distinguish between, as most times I was unsure if it was present day or a vision. Sometimes in books these things are outlined with italics, but not in this book.
In saying this I did really enjoy the story and was eager to find out exactly what was going on. It is a fast paced book, which made the book fly by. I enjoyed the different characters and the relationship between Rysa, Landon and Dragon was interesting. There could have been a bit more romance between the couple for me, as I did like it when it focused on them and their growing relationship.
This is a solid start to what could be a really great series, I will be checking out the next book.

Going Under

Brooke Wright has only two goals her senior year at Charity Run High School: stay out of trouble and learn to forgive herself for the past. Forgiveness proves elusive, and trouble finds her anyway when she discovers a secret club at school connected to the death of her best friend. She learns that swim team members participate in a “Fantasy Slut League,” scoring points for their sexual acts with unsuspecting girls. Brooke, wracked with guilt over her friend’s death, decides to infiltrate the league by becoming one of the “unsuspecting girls,” and exact revenge on the boys who stole away her best friend. An unexpected romance complicates her plans, and her dogged pursuit of justice turns her reckless as she underestimates just how far the boys will go to keep their sex club a secret. (This is a New Adult fiction book with mature themes. It contains graphic sex and language and a description of sexual violence.)

Sponge

People like to ask me where I get my ideas for stories.
“From you,” I reply, and they look confused. And then the confusion turns to suspicion.
“Oh really?” they ask tentatively.
“Mmhmm,” I reply. I drum my fingers on my writer’s notebook. (Well, okay. I don’t have a writer’s notebook. I store everything in my head. So I drum my fingers on my head.)
“Sooo . . . what do you have in there?” they ask.
“You’ll find out in my next book.” I smile and wink.
They’re getting scared. “Were you at Kroger last week? Did you see me in the bakery? I swear to God I didn’t do what you think you saw! It was somebody else! Please don’t put that in your book!!”
“Oh, I saw you all right. And it’s sooo going in my book,” I reply.
“You writers!” they scream. “You think you can slap a disclaimer on your books and write whatever you want!”
“Can’t we?”
The truth may shock you. It may scare you. It may piss you off. But your favorite writer? Well, she most likely got some ideas in that favorite book of yours from spying on people. Maybe even you. That’s right. Flat-out, creepy-but-trying-to-look-nonchalant-about-it spying. And it happens every second of the day. You’re just not aware of it.
We’re sponges, see? We soak up everything we come into contact with. Smells, sounds, tastes, conversations. We store these tidbits away (either in our heads or in notebooks) to later develop into characters or plot ideas. Because the bottom line is this: we can only infuse so much of ourselves and our experiences into our characters and stories before they turn utterly tedious or narcissistic. One of my favorite things about Brooke in Going Under is that (aside from her foul mouth) that girl is nothing like me. (And for the record, I like her a whole lot better!)
So who do I spy on? Where do my ideas come from? Well, all over. I’m acquiring ideas all the time (and I should really start writing them down instead of relying so heavily on my memory). One I’ve been trying to work into a story for a long time comes from an acquaintance who described a church for me she used to attend. One located in the deep South. One with a preacher who liked to stand up at the pulpit and call people out for their transgressions during the service:
“Pete! Jimmy saw you down at Pumpkin’s Bar last Friday! Now we all of us in this congregation know that you have an alcohol problem, son! So what were you doin’ at Pumpkin’s?”
All eyes on Pete. Poor, poor Pete.
“Darlene! I done told you to stop gossipin’ about Jimmy’s wife behind her back!”
Jimmy’s wife looks outraged.
“If you’ve got somethin’ to say to her, say it to her face! But make sure you say it in a loving, Christ-like way, of course.”
Yeah, so I’m trying to work that in because it’s too hilarious to be true, but it’s so freaking true. And stories like these are precisely why writers spy. We soak up these events, these real-life people/caricatures, these conversations because they make delicious stories. They add what our imaginations can’t. And when you write realistic fiction, you need that. The world around you becomes your candy store of ideas, and you begin to discover that reality is pretty crazy.
I love reading reviews of realistic fiction that state, “Oh, that isn’t very realistic,” or “That could never happen.” Wanna make a bet? That story you just read is a collection of soaked up people and events sprinkled with the ideas of the author. It may not be one hundred percent true, but it’s pretty darn close.
So the next time you’re out and about, you might want to look over your shoulder. Go ahead and let your eyes dart around. Think twice before you do what you’re just about to do. Because we’re watching. The notebooks are open, people. We’re watching and we’re jotting.
Totally. Creepy.

Gail Koger

Enter the rafflecopter at the end of the post to win The Colleti Warlords Series, The Nasty Vamp or I Hear Voices.

I was a 9-1-1 dispatcher for thirty-one years and to keep insanity at bay, I took up writing. Not to worry. The insanity isn’t catching – much. Other than the addiction to chocolate and the twitch in my left eye, I’m good. I’ve had my weird but true stories published in newspapers and magazines. Just My Luck, The Warlord’s Comeuppance, The Nasty Vamp and I Hear Voices are still available at Amazon. Vexing Voss is the next in the Coletti Warlord series.

Interview
1.A few of the heroines in your books have an aversion to spiders, are you afraid of them?

Me? Afraid? Have you seen the spiders in Arizona? They're BIG! Really big and creepy. Like the Wolf spider. Hairy as Bigfoot and as fast as a barracuda. Their green eyes shine in the dark. At night my yard turns into something out of a horror movie. I never venture into the backyard without a can of Raid in each hand.
A word to the wise. Never, ever stomp on them in your house. I made that horrible mistake. Once. Momma Wolf spider carries her young on her body and when I did the Cha-Cha on her ass, hundreds of those little suckers ran in every direction.
I grabbed a broom and started whacking. Okay, I was screaming a little, too. My poor neighbors thought I was being murdered and called 9-1-1. On the bright side, I got a date with a really cute cop and a brawny exterminator.
2. The Nasty Vamp is my favorite book to read when I need a good pick me up laugh, have you thought of writing more books with those characters in it?
Imagine Ben St. Croix, the werewolf Alpha of Las Vegas, forced to protect Bambi, the clueless vampire slayer. The Vegas' bookies place her odds of survival at 100 to 1.
3. Do you have a release date for Vexing Voss yet?
Whispers, my publisher is closing its door on June 30th. I am in the process of finding a new home for my Coletti Warlord series.
4. Are you currently working on any new books?
I just finished Vexing Voss and I'm now working on Zarek's Angels, the next in the Coletti Warlord series.
Vexing Voss: Determined to find her mother's killer, Zoey must evade capture by a ruthless Warlord; but when her clever disguises, skunk perfume, stun gun, smoke bombs and tranquillizer darts fail to stop him, she’s forced to negotiate her surrender.
Zarek's Angels: Mog the Merciless, the Tai-Kok supreme commander, traps Voss, Zarek, Talree, and Sariel on an airless moon with only five hours of breathable air. They either surrender or die. But Mog made one big mistake. He doesn't think the Warlord's mates are any kind of threat.
5. What is your favorite book of 2013 so far?
I love all of Ilona Andrews books. My favorites are Magic Bites, Magic Burns and Gunmetal Magic. All of them have kick butt heroines and great stories.
6. What is your favorite type of chocolate?
My most favorite chocolate is made in Glendale, Arizona at the Cerreta's candy factory. Their French mint truffles are to die for. Literally. Anyone stupid enough to help themselves to my French mints will lose a finger, hand or arm.
7. Will The Ghost Wore Polyester be offered on Kindle any time soon?
Unfortunately, no. The book is out of print but I accept bribes and for the right price, I can send you a copy.

Colleti Warlords

Kaylee Jones is a trouble magnet. Chaos and disaster are her faithful companions. She belongs to the thin blue line protecting Earth from the Tai-Kok, alien predators who consider our world an all-you-can-eat banquet. Her crappy luck puts her on the alien freaks- most wanted list and lands her in one of their prison cells. Her roommate? A very hungry vampire. Okay, Talree's really a Coletti Warlord who decides to make her his mate. Kaylee's definitely not willing but isn't strong enough to fight him off and now he owns her mind, body and soul. She'll admit the sex is hot and the bossy jerk has agreed to save Earth from annihilation. The bad news is, Warlords aren't benevolent do-gooder types and there is a price for his help: the women of Earth. And the really bad news is, Talrees' low-down conniving brother, Malik, has joined forces with the alien freaks and now Kaylee and Talree have to stop them from destroying both their worlds.

Stealing from a warlord and giving him the one finger salute as I made my getaway was not the brightest thing I’d ever done. Okay, it was an incredibly stupid stunt. Did I mention that this particular Coletti warlord is the most feared in the entire galaxy? That Zarek’s the ultimate predator and even the other warlords are scared spitless of him? That he never ever stops until he either captures or kills his prey? Yeah, I have the big, bad after me and all because of one little finger. Okay and a Ditrim crystal the size of my fist. Am I worried? Of course, only an idiot doesn’t fear a very angry Coletti warlord. But, I am very good at what I do. Bad news is, so is Zarek.

After being laid off from her psychic gig, Zelda Dragos decides finding Montezuma’s lost treasure has to be easier than prying a check out of the state’s unemployment office. The fly in the ointment is the tenacious Derek Sloan, an Indiana Jones type, who wants the gold for himself. The first clue in the treasure hunt is an Aztec amulet on display at the Phoenix Art Museum. All Zelda needs to do is “borrow” it for a bit. Unfortunately, Derek has the identical plan. Out of options, Zelda finds herself stuck with a partner who thinks she needs a keeper and he’s just the man for the job. To find the treasure all they have to deal with is an angry Apache Thunder God, Asmoday, the demon king of the Ninth Hell, eight thousand vengeful Aztec spirits and a mummified Aztec warrior. Review

****This book was part of a blog tour I received a copy for my honest review****
Erin was hired to do the costumes for Alek new production, it's her first big job and while she is excited she is also nervous. She left her home in the states after a tragic accident and has avoided any real relationships. Alek is the talented, hot playboy with a dark past of his own, the two of them start a passionate affair that goes farther than either one of them thought it would. This book was good, it had me hooked from the first chapter and I couldn't put it down till I finished the whole thing. Erin was a slightly frustrating character for me, I wanted her to be more confident in herself, I did like the changes she made throughout the book. Alek made me want to give him a hug, he seemed so broken and he hid it behind a sophisticated mask. Aleks mother was a a huge bitch, I don't think she was doing what was best for her kids, she was just a selfish hag. The story was filled with twist and turns that I kinda saw coming, betrayals, lust and violence all mixed together to form a sweet love story. The love scene were sometimes sweet and other times they were intense and darkly erotic. The Prelude had me running the gauntlet of emotions from frustration, to hope, anger, back to hope, sadness, shock and finally happiness. This isn't a lighthearted read, it's filled with deep emotions and engaging characters that have you either loving them or hating them. This is the first book I have read from this author and it didn't disappoint I am definitely going to be checking out the rest of her book.

Are you going to stand there all night, or are you going to let me out?” Corinne called while tapping lightly on the glass behind him.
Ledger pushed his worries to the back of his mind and reluctantly straightened from the side of the car. Despite his new worry about Cedric catching up with them, he couldn’t drive any farther tonight. After a few hours of sleep, he’d be refreshed, and they could pick up the trail bright and early in the morning.
He turned to open the door and helped Corinne straighten from the seat. Stretching her arms above her head, Corinne breathed, “Hmm…I think that’s the longest car ride I’ve ever had. What are our room numbers?”
Two-thirteen. We’re leaving early in the morning again, so what do you need me to carry in for you? The less we take in now, the less we’ll have to bring back out in the morning.” Ledger turned from Corinne and headed toward the trunk without glancing back.
What do you mean we’re in two-thirteen? You only got one room?”
Yeah. Don’t worry, there are two beds. We won’t be here for more than a few hours, anyway. As soon as I’ve caught some sleep, we’ll be back on the road again.”
I’m not sharing a room with you! What if I snore? You’ve been up since who knows when; I’d hate to keep you awake!” Corinne grabbed her phone out of the cup holder and slammed the door.
You snore? I never would have guessed. Don’t worry, I’ll sleep through it.”
I don’t snore.”
Sure.” He snorted. She was so fun to tease.
I said what if I snore, not that I do snore. Anyway, that’s beside the point. You need to go get another room.” Corinne followed him to the trunk of the car and stood with her hands on her hips.
She was close enough that his keen hearing picked up the elevation in her heart rate, and the blush starting at the base of her throat beckoned him. She did want two rooms, but it appeared that the thought of sharing a room excited her in spite of herself.
Sorry, princess. One room. I’m going up to get some sleep. You can stay here with the car if you really want to. I’ll be back in about six hours.”
