The Twins of Devonshire and The Curse of The Widow

Welcome to the sixth day of The Twins of Devonshire and the Curse of the Widow blog tour. It will run until August 17th and will feature excerpts and new author interviews each day. But first, here is the obligatory blurb about the novel to settle you into this strange world:

A plague has covered the land, a single word on the lips of the frightened masses: the Widow. Washing a wave of terror over the countryside and then disappearing like a thief in the night, the Widow holds a kingdom in the palm of her hand. The eyes of Chaos have settled on Prima Terra and heroes must rise. Xeno Lobo, enigmatic and cryptic, hunts the Widow, seeking an object taken from him years before. Will he be able to stem the tide of violence and horror that sweeps the land?

A few questions for the author:

How did you come up with the title of your book or series?

The title is borrowed from the plot and the characters. The series is actually part of much larger epic fantasy story line that I have been working on for a very long time. It follows characters who have been removed from one dimension and inserted into another with no knowledge of their past.

Tell us a little bit about your cover art. Who designed it? Why did you go with that particular image/artwork?

The cover is actually a photo taken by my brother while he was visiting Europe a few years back.

Who is your favorite character from your book and why? How about your least favorite character?  What makes them less appealing to you?

I have to admit that I don't have characters who are my least favorite, especially in a story this short. I generally try to write characters in which I am invested. Otherwise, the whole process becomes tedious, like going to lunch with someone you don't like. There are clearly heroes and villains, and I have a tendency to like and write characters who blur that line.

Here be an excerpt for your enjoyment:

The halls of the Tower of Darkness were bathed in shadow. The narrow corridors were draped with murals and texts older than time. A minuscule window that lined these pathways was stained in black glass.

The tower rose high into the skies, higher than the greatest reaches of the frozen clouds that circled it. As the citadel neared the stars above, it became progressively smaller and smaller until only one room remained: the Widow’s chamber.

The room was situated with only a throne of obsidian and a cold steel table on which an iridescent orb resided. Beside the throne lay the slumbering were-beast and the pearl whelp that resided atop her throne of death.

She moved about the room like a dancer amidst a song, her head tilted back and golden hair spilling over her shoulders like a waterfall. Her arms reached out into nothingness and a hum echoed in the dim chambers as she made her way.

The spinning stopped as she neared the orb and in one movement, she brought her head over it. Her hair spilled over the sides of it. She muttered to herself incoherently. As she pulled back, the orb had gone from a swirling mass of indistinguishable colors to pitch black, the change extraordinary.

“Mighty orb of darkness, what do you see?” she called into the darkness. The orb imploded upon itself, the darkness reverberating within the shadow until it stilled.

A voice emanated from it, a dark voice that boomed from wall to wall. “A force approaches. A man bound to the Light, a servant of the enemy of the Towers of Darkness.”

“Enemy of the Towers of Darkness, how enjoyable,” she cooed.

Her voice was elegant.

The voice came again, as monotone as it had previously been. “The servant brings a second, and soon a third. These forces align against your reign, against the reign of the Towers of Darkness.”

“Karian, the Widow, fears no mortal, especially enemies of the darkness,” she laughed at the orb manically. She danced about the room again, the were-beast lifting its head as its master gallivanted like a child to a tune that had ensnared her soul.

She danced and danced until she came to a stop abruptly, her hair tossed across the face. Her brow was furrowed, lost in thought, her finger raised in question. “Who is this servant of the Light? Has he, she, a name?”

“The name that slices through the darkness is Xeno Lobo. He has defeated the Nighen, your carrier of death to the south, in Me’lein,” returned the voice.

“Xeno Lobo,” she whispered to herself, her eyes closed. Her left hand began to glow, the darkness swirling about her and then in a blink of an eye, a sword materialized.

The blade was etched in shadow and death, the hilt carved from human bone. The guard was a gnarled, twisted form of a shadow woman. She spun the sword with the practiced hand of a swordswoman and slammed it into the stone of her fortress. Splintering the rock, she turned back to the orb, chest heaving.

“Xeno Lobo.”

“Yes, they speak of Xeno Lobo. The caretaker of the crest of Devon,” replied the voice without inflection, without care.

She looked across her room and saw the twinkling jewel crest that rested upon her throne, the golden chain sparkling in the moonlight. The sight of it drove her mad, swinging and striking the walls with her blade. The whelp rose from its perch, searching back into the darkness.

It screamed the whole way.

“But I took that damnable thing from him once. Why does he wish for more pain, more regret?” she queried madly.

“I do not know, Mistress Karian, but I do know that he comes here for that crest. You are the bearer of his pain and regret.”

She calmed, the sword vanishing from her grasp. The darkness embraced her once again. Her body fell to the cold floor, hair spilled about her face. She remained there, cackling madly as the shadows encircled her.

Tempted by Two 18+

The following review is for 18+ readers.
Tempted by Two
3 of 5 stars false
When executive woman Katie Warren arrives in the picturesque village of Little Marplethorpe for a country holiday, to reassess her life and her future, she doesn't bargain on ending up in a hot three way love affair with a man she's admired from afar... and his gorgeously handsome male partner.
Marcus Dane and Owen Foster are lovers, committed for a lifetime, but they both enjoy the company of women as friends and bedmates too. Encountering Katie at an exhibition of his work, Marcus knows she's just the kind of bold, daring, imaginative woman who'll relish sharing erotic games with Owen and himself.
But what none of the trio expect is that their intense, steamy threesome will quickly deepen into a bond that's a lot more than just simply fabulous sex.

Katie Warren needs a break. While on a much needed vacation, she visits the art gallery of one of her favorite artists, Marcus Dane, only to run into the man while there. Add his lover Owen Foster and Katie's in for a vacation she will surely remember.
I'm a little disappointed by this book. It was good but it lacked something for me. I am a complete sucker for M/M/F and was extremely excited, but I just didn't love it or the characters. It is a very sexy short read though, filled with steamy sex and a surprising connection between the characters. I will say that most of my reviews of short books I rant and rave about things being rushed, but I didn't feel that with this one, the delivery was well done.

Business and Pleasure & The Best of Both Worlds 18+

Business and Pleasure (Rags and Riches Series, #1)
Can mixing business and pleasure ever result in a happy ending?
When sexy, rich Lawrence Russo asks Mia to come and work for him in Italy for two weeks, she jumps at the chance. After all, it beats pole dancing, and the salary he offers her is practically obscene.
A relationship quickly begins to develop between the two, but Mia can't help but wonder if Lawrence's feelings for her are genuine or if he feels he's just paying for a service.
Even if their relationship is strong enough to survive her insecurities, what will happen when somebody from her past shows up and threatens to reveal her deepest, darkest secret?
Content Warning: explicit sex

Review

****This book was part of a blog tour I was given a copy for my honest review****
Super short read.
Mia is a stripper and has a favourite customer. When instead of showing interest, offers her a job in Italy for two weeks, she is unsure of what will be required of her.
Is she a convenient escort? Despite her insecurities a relationship of sorts starts.
I think this book was a little too short for me. Not enough time elapsed for me to get the flow for the relationship, characters or storyline..it was quite rushed. I did like the idea of the story, very pretty woman, and that is always good. I just think this needed more story injected into it. The explicit sex was also not as steamy as I was anticipating, maybe I am just getting jaded after all the sexy books I read :( Also editing wise, there were missing words, usually I am not a stickler for that sort of thing, but it happened a few times.
Unfortunately this one just didn't quite meet my needs this time, but I do believe this mostly has to do with the length of the book.

A choice between two men? If only it were that simple. Melissa Morgan seems to have it all…her modeling career is taking off and she's engaged to one of the most eligible bachelors in London. But when she finds Jonathan cheating on her again, Melissa finds solace in the arms of Riley, a sexy bar owner trying to recover from the heartbreak of his last relationship. Melissa shouldn't even want Riley, but she can't seem to stay away, especially when she finds in him everything that's missing in her relationship with Jonathan. Melissa knows she has to make a hard choice, and when it comes to choosing between the life she's always wanted and the man she's falling in love with, she might find out that she can't have the best of both worlds. Content Warning: explicit sex and strong language

Review

****This book was part of a blog our I was given a copy for my honest review****
Melissa has a cheating alcoholic fiancé. He swore things would change when they got engaged...but they have not. Unfortunately he keeps her in a life that suits her, being a very wealthy man. After cheating on her again Melissa decides what's good for the goose is good for the gander and has a one night stand with a delicious bar owner. What she doesn't bargain on is falling for Riley. Now she has to choose between her heart and her envisioned life.
This book is super short at about 70ish pages. The problem with stories of this length is that it is incredibly hard to develop a character like Melissa and make your readers believe that she is redeemable, because you have so little time to do it in. Unfortunately that is what happened here for me. Everything was so rushed that all I could see was Melissa and her selfish choices and I just couldn't understand her, nor did I want to . I think this story could be a good one and you could get Melissa to that stage if the book was fleshed out more. As it is I was just grasping at straws. With a little more editing and a more time spent on the background story this one could be a winner.

Bonds of Desire 18+

The following review is for 18+ readers.

Goodreads Amazon B&N
Bonds of Desire (Wicked Play, #3)
 4 of 5 stars false
Book three of Wicked Play
Lawyer Allison English never planned to return to The Den—despite her naughty fantasies about being bound by owner Seth Matthews. But when club guest Tyler Wysong is injured in a scene, Seth turns to Allie for help. Aroused by both men, Allie should turn the case down. But she can't…
After his bad experience, Tyler has no interest in being with another Dom. Yet he can't deny his attraction to Master Seth. When Seth offers him a place to stay, Tyler agrees—if Allie will stay too. But what good is a chaperone who adds to his temptation?
Living with two subs brings out Seth's protective instincts, though Allie insists she's not into the lifestyle, and Tyler swears he's done with it. But the chemistry between the trio prompts them to agree to submit to him for one week, and he'll show them both the true pleasure that a Dom can provide.
The intimacy could break them all, or bind them together forever.

Review

****Carina Press through NetGalley gave me a copy of this book for my honest review****
Seth Matthews, Master Seth as he's known at The Den, thinks the day is just like any other. That is until he sees something that disturbs him on the monitors. A man who Seth already views as a poor excuse for a Dom, is with a sub in a private room, but what catches his eye is the treatment of the man chained to the St. Andrew's cross. Master Rex has taken things too far, causing him to intervene. What he comes across is something that he wishes he'd stopped earlier, and will change his life forever.
Tyler knows the game, he knows the score. Being paid for the use of his body, he often finds himself in situations he doesn't enjoy but bills need paid. Visiting The Den and being employed by the dirty politician leaves him severely injured and under the care of Master Seth, a man that he is instantly attracted to, and a lawyer Allison English, who his body can't help reacting to.
Allison has been to the club before, swearing she'll never go back regardless of her attraction to owner Master Seth. That is until she gets a call from a friend saying they need her help. She knows Tyler should press charges for what he's been through, but she finds herself dealing with not one but two of the most stubborn yet utterly gorgeous men she's ever met. What happens when the wounds start to heal but the attraction is still there?
Master Seth has had both of these lovely submissives in his home, and he plans to keep them there. One week. They will give him their submission, but Master Seth plans to take so much more...
This is my kind of story, absolutely delicious. The chemistry between Seth and Tyler was burning up the pages. Allie was my least favorite in this ménage but she brought her own positives to the story. The emotions are high, the wounds deep, and the sex on fire. Have I mentioned I loved it? This was more about the emotional aspects of a D/s relationship vs. the physical kink. It's a nice reminder that you need both, and too many books get caught up in toys and accessories. Nice emotional read.
Part of a series but can be read as a stand alone.

Against The Ropes 18+

The following review is for 18+ readers.
Goodreads Pre-Order on Amazon 9/03
 Against the Ropes
4 of 5 stars false1/2
He scared me. He thrilled me. And after one touch, all I could think about was getting more…
Makayla never thought she’d set foot in an underground mixed-martial arts club. But if anyone needs a medic on hand, it’s these guys. Trouble is, at her first sight of the club’s owner she’s the one feeling breathless.
All sleek muscle and restrained power, the man they call Torment plays to win at any cost. Whether it’s in the ring or in the bedroom, he knows exactly when to use a soft touch and when to launch a full-on assault. He always knows just how far he can push. And he’s about to tempt Makayla in ways she never imagined…

Review

****Sourcebooks Casablanca through NetGalley gave me an ARC of this book for my honest review****
Torment never knew what he was getting into when Makayla walks through his door, but she has his attention immediately. It just so happens to be his lucky day when he needs a medic for the fighters and Makayla can't believe she let her friend talk her into working at the underground fight club. All that is forgotten when she sees the owner, Torment. Tattooed, built, and totally alpha she decides the scenery is worth being out of her comfort zone. But this tough guy has a whole other life that no one knows about...
There wasn't much I didn't love about this book. Sexy alpha male with a tough streak a mile wide, funny but naïve heroine that gives the hero crap and gets sick at the sight of blood but takes a job as a medic for an underground fighting ring? Priceless. This book is witty, sarcastic, sexy as sin, drama packed, suspenseful, and pushes the edges at times. There are times where you hate the characters and other times where you are in love with them. More by this author please!
